Today we’re celebrating the month of August by diving into everything you need to know about the August birthstone, Peridot. Before we move on, you’d be interested to know that August has a total of three birthstones namely peridot, sardonyx, and spinel. Here is everything you need to know about the August birthstone, peridot:
Peridot is positioned at a 7 on the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness. Therefore, peridot is fairly hard so you can wear it in everyday jewelry such as rings, pendant necklaces, bracelets, and/ or earrings.
Did You Know? Peridot has also been found on meteorites, and comet dust brought back in 2006 from the stardust space probe contained peridot. |
Peridot is mined throughout the world. Peridot was first mined in Egypt in 1500 BC. Although, peridot was first confused to be emerald. Today, peridot is mined in the US specifically in New Mexico and Arizona. Peridot is also mined in Pakistan, Thailand, and China.
Peridot is sometimes referred to as ‘Hawaiian diamonds’. The reason for the name is that peridot shares something in common with the diamond. They’re formed with great heat well beneath the Earth’s surface, and they’re vaulted to the Earth’s surface through volcanic activity.
Did You Know? Peridot is also the traditional gift for the 16th wedding anniversary. |
