Fake ring!? Should we clutch our proverbial pearls? Maybe it’s not such a bad idea after all, in fact after putting some time and thought into it…I approve. Let’s talk about the fake engagement ring trend.
The name is misleading, we aren’t suggesting spending your whole married life with a fake ring. What this trend entails is proposing with a ring that is used as a placeholder so that you can go and pick a ring together. Making the ring decisions together is very current, more people want some input on a ring they intend to wear for the rest of their lives. A fake is a great way to get the surprise proposal you want while giving your intended a chance to be included in the buying process.
PriceScope is here for ring buyers, we have diamond concierge services available to help you find the ring and stone of your dreams. There are a lot of people buying diamond rings without being armed with the knowledge they need to get the best for their dollars. PriceScope is here to help people make more informed decisions.
I think calling it a placeholder is more apt, because the stone may not be a highly valuable gem, but a ring is a tangible object. Fake seems like the wrong word or at least not the most correct choice.
As mentioned above, a common reason to use a placeholder ring is so the couple can ring shop together. Since you will hopefully share the important decision-making going forward, this is just illustrative of that.
Some couples have decided that they are only looking for one ring, not a wedding set. Pooling their ring budget to get one ring to fill the role of both wedding and engagement rings. Many of us trend towards more bling, but more bling in this regard could be the single, yet more valuable ring.

Having a destination proposal? Popping the question near water? Including a family pet? Having a little one carry the ring? All of those options and so many others include a level of risk when it comes to the security of the ring. Using a placeholder gets that exciting proposal with less potential to lose the bling!
So, the bottom line is that we can see why a placeholder ring would be an alluring choice for a lot of people. Really, we just want people to be happy, in love, and get the bling that signifies them the best.
We always strongly encourage the use of vetted vendors on PriceScope. These sellers meet or exceed PriceScope’s rigorous requirements for truthful advertising, best business practices, and proactive consumer protection.
