Massive 2,492ct Rough Diamond Unearthed

We are fascinated by diamonds and love to learn about their history and origin stories. Diamonds are mined and emerge from the earth in a rough state that might not look as impressive. Through the extraordinary skill of the people who cut and polish them, they become the sparkly sensations that we know and love.

A recent find was unearthed in Botswana from deep within the mines, using X ray technology to locate it. The current uncut weight is a staggering 2,492 ct!

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

2,492-Carat Rough Diamond

Lucara Diamond Corp. has uncovered a colossal 2,492-carat “exceptional” rough diamond at its renowned Karowe mine in Botswana. This remarkable find, one of the largest rough diamonds ever discovered, was extracted from the mine’s high-value south lobe using advanced X-ray transmission technology (XRT). The technology, installed in 2017, allows for the recovery of giant stones without damage. The discovery surpasses Lucara’s previous finds, including the 1,758-carat Sewelô and 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona. This reinforces the Karowe mine’s reputation for producing high-quality rough diamonds.

ROUGH TO FINISHED DIAMOND PROCESS

Diamonds are billions of years old, formed deep within the Earth’s mantle under extreme pressure and heat. Most diamonds that reach the surface today were formed around 1 to 3.5 billion years ago. These ancient gemstones were brought closer to the Earth’s surface through volcanic activity, encased in kimberlite or lamproite pipes. The immense age of diamonds contributes to their mystique and enduring value, making them not only symbols of luxury but also geological time capsules.
