In January 2025, the natural diamond market for round diamonds in the 1.00–1.19 carat range experienced nuanced shifts across various clarity and color grades. These changes, detailed in our latest natural diamond price analysis, reflect the continuing complexity and dynamic fluctuations in diamond pricing.
In the premium segment, D color, FL clarity diamonds experienced an increase from December’s $12,087 to January’s $12,351, showcasing a rising demand for flawless natural diamonds as the new year begins.
Interestingly, D/IF prices were higher. The D/IF grade remained steady at $13,468 from December to January, signaling sustained consumer interest in exceptionally high-quality stones.
The mid-range grades showed mixed trends. The price for F color, VVS2 clarity diamonds adjusted slightly from $7,467 in December to $7,517 in January, reflecting stable demand for high-quality diamonds that offer a balance between eye-clean natural diamonds and price. The G/VVS2 category decreased from $6,159 in December to $6,053 in January, perhaps indicating a slight dip in demand post-holiday season.
The lower grades saw notable variations, especially in the SI clarity categories. For instance, J/SI1 decreased slightly from $2,798 in December to $2,641 in January, which might indicate a softening demand for lower-grade diamonds or a correction following a peak seasonal demand.
The January 2025 price trends highlight the diamond market’s response to shifting consumer demand and broader economic conditions. The rise in premium grades underscores the ongoing interest in flawless natural diamonds. On the other hand, the decline in mid-range and lower grades reflects a customary recalibration of demand following the holiday season, indicating a normalization in purchasing patterns.
In our latest analysis of the Top 5 Popular Natural Diamond Shapes from December 2024 to January 2025, we’ve identified several key trends that indicate subtle yet significant shifts in consumer preferences across the market.
The Round diamond, while maintaining the largest market share at 69.51%, has seen a decline in popularity by 2.14% since December. This decrease might indicate market saturation or a growing consumer preference for more unique and diverse shapes that offer a distinct aesthetic different from traditional norms.
Conversely, the Oval diamond shape saw a substantial rise in popularity, increasing by 1.63% to 8.00%. This uptick suggests a robust trend towards elongated shapes sometimes used in Toi et Moi Rings, which provide a modern look with brilliance similar to round diamonds but with a more distinctive silhouette. Similarly, the Pear shape, known for its unique teardrop appearance, increased by 0.65% to 5.64%, and the Cushion shape grew by 0.31% to 5.16%. Both trends underline a consumer movement towards stylistically varied diamond cuts.
The Emerald cut, with its iconic stepped facets that elegantly showcase a diamond’s clarity, subtly increased in popularity by 0.11% to 5.52%. This slight rise could be attributed to the increased interest in diamonds that offer a classical feel and a clean, contemporary aesthetic.
These shifts in the diamond market suggest an increasing preference for various fancy shapes, reflecting both aesthetic trends and strategic diversification.
When shopping for loose diamonds, it’s important to consider factors like cut quality and vendor services, such as upgrade options and return policies, which can significantly influence the price.
