The Popularity of Oval-Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

In the future, we can expect oval-cut diamonds to remain exceptionally popular. Engagement rings that feature an oval-cut diamond especially will stay in the top ranks! Why the oval? There are several reasons that people love oval-cut diamonds. First, they can appear larger than rounds of equivalent weight, depending on how they were cut. Second, an oval can make your finger look longer and slimmer, which is a factor that many people take into account. Third, diamonds with rounded silhouettes are less likely to get chipped or broken than shapes with corners. Finally, many people simply find the shape aesthetic more interesting, distinctive or pleasing than other shapes, personally, and that matters!

Why not an oval? Like a few other fancy cut shapes, ovals have a higher potential for dark tips and/or bow ties. This is because the areas for best light return are not even throughout the stone. The wide belly tends to carry the lion’s share of brightness and sparkle, because there is less surface for the light to pass through on the ends. The angles within the belly are more like those of a round brilliant. However, checking the diamond for superior cut and color you’re comfortable with will help avoid these hangups.
