Hi guys, was thinking that sidestones are harder to come by, so I purchased this pair of 0.5 tcw ruby as below:

image_905.jpg

The colour is accurate even when removed from the container. It shifts to a slight orange pink under certain lighting, which won't show in the photos I took.

Now, I'm left with the center stone. It's gonna be sapphire, spinel or tourmaline due to the wide range of colours I can choose from. But I'm torn between lighter pink, even more saturated pink or a contrast colour like blue green as the center stone. Should I use a larger center or should I keep the length of the center stone slightly longer(just below the truncated corners) than the sidestones. Decisions decisions.

Any ideas? What would you choose as the center stone and it's size if you are in my position?

I would opt for either a purple or bluey green or mid-blue stone as centre stone, as the ruby sides appear to have quite of blue in them.

I love the combination of red and green, therefore, if I have to choose just one, then it has to be a bluey green stone.

Just had an idea, taking inspiration from the thread about have 2 hearts as side stones mounted on a separate ring to be worn with a RB ring, how about setting the rubies on a separate ring, and have interchangeable CS centre stones?

DK :))

Hi DK, thank you for your input and what bright ideas you have! I haven't thought of a purple center stone, perhaps a pastel purple? Omg, cos I do see some purple grow from the stone under some lightings.

With regards to the idea of interchangeable CS centre stones, do you mind illustrating cos I can't visualize the design you had in mind. :saint:

Wow those will make great side stones!

Oh, I have seen a pendant with a purple amethyst surrounded by hot pink sapphires and it was gorgeous! So my vote is for a purple with about the same depth of color as the rubies.

Innerkitten: Thanks for your comment. You are being really kind.

Diamondseeker2006: That's a nice combination too! :appl: wish I had more stones

I like the combo of blue and red together it's kind of retro. A lighter pink would be cool too. I wouldn't go with hot pink because it will compete with the side stones.

Those are gorgeous rubies! I went, "Ooooooo" when I opened your post. How bright you were to snap them up when they were available! I vote for a purple center stone -- real saturated purple. There's enough blue in the rubies to pull it together really well. I have a purple amethyst w/red flashes & am looking for a pair of rhodolites for side stones, same idea.

I'm in love with those rubies! Do you know anything about their treatment, if any?

Colour-wise, I think a rich deep purple, blue, green or anything blue - green would look great with the rubies, that means either sapphire, garnet, tourmaline or amethyst. I think a lighter toned center stone will end up being overpowered by the side stones. For best effect, my preference is a center stone that is larger than the sides, either slightly larger or significantly larger, not just longer in length. A much larger center stone keeps the focus on it whilst a slightly larger center is a bit more antique-ish.

Awwww, you are too sweet... Yes, it's heated only. Guess heating does bring out some colour intensity which I rarely come across in unheated pinks.

Any luck with your sides so far? Pretty excited to look at your completed project. :lickout:

If it's green( since I'm lacking of green rings), in your opinion what kind of green would look best with my sides?

Now that I'm set with the size, guess I'll need to stay on the lookout for at least a 1.5 carat emerald cut center. Thanks for making me see that!

Please, please, please make this ring.

OMG! I love this!! Very outstanding indeed. :D Then it gonna be tsavorite. *insert $$$ sign* Do you happen to know what is the green stone in pic?

Gorgeous sidestones! You could go with a saturated aquamarine but it still might be too light. How about a lighter green emerald (it would be cheaper than an intensely coloured tsavorite )? Would you consider a bright orange Mandarin spessartite garnet? Eager to see it completed!

Thank you for your compliment! I'm glad and am taking it as a "PS approved" sides. :rodent:

Personally I prefer the combi of hot pink with purple or green and find bright orange mandarin spess round in solitaire/bezel the most appealing.

Btw, earlier on I was looking around for emerald cut stones and found out there's not much choices online. This is getting hard.

If it's green you're looking for how about an emerald cut green tourmaline? That might be easier to find than a green garnet. Here is a nice amethyst. http://www.mastercutgems.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=7149

Those side stones are lovely. Where are they from?

I like the green with a hint of blue combination. Would be stunning. I would do it in high karat yg but that's just me.

Hi PSers, happy 2014 to all!!

Innerkitten: Wow, this amethyst has red flashes! Thank you for the link! I notice that it's around 3.5 carat and my sides are at 0.25 carat each. Is that a huge size difference?

Sparks1007: They are from Jeff Davies. :D A blue green tourmaline seems like a good choice too!

The photo Chrono posted is exactly what I was thinking about when I saw your photos. I love that combo of pink and green, you can do it a million ways to Sunday and it always looks amazing. I also like the idea of something purple if you want a less in your face look. But I think a tsavorite with those is the way to go. And please pick something emerald cut or one that looks like this (don't know the name).

Rectangular three stone rings always look so amazing. They really aren't done often enough.

I like both ideas a lot. A tsavorite w/the rubies would be wonderful, but OH, that amethyst of Dana's is drool-ish. That would be a beautiful combination too & less expensive & easier to find than a tsav. You can't go wrong either way!

Thanks snowyrin! Totally gorgeous. I'm desperate for some ruby action. Next project... One day.

What are the measurements of your rubies? Go by that instead of the carat weight.

It's about 4x2mm.

The amethyst is 10 x 8 mm....yes, unfortunately I think it is too large for the rubies.

Yeah, therefore the search continues....

Meanwhile I'm waiting for this to reach me after nearly 3 months of waiting, couldn't believe I have such patience.

Worth waiting for; it's gorgeous! But why 3 months? Any reason given for the delay?
