Hi All,

My boyfriend and I think we found a stone we love, we just looked at the GIA report and we want to better understand if it’s worth the price.

We were totally set on the stone until we noticed that there was a chip and also a significant amount of feathers. Does that mean the stone is compromised? We couldn’t see or feel a chip when we saw it in person. Also if down the line it cracked or got a larger chip is that something insurance would cover?

$4500

Old stones tend to have issues with chips, feathers, flea bites, etc. I think insurance would cover it but you
really need to consult with your insurer to make sure. I can think of one case on Pricescope where someone's
stone got damaged and their insurance did cover it...YMMV.

Your girdle is med to extremely thick on this stone. I would think you are in better shape than a stone that
is thin to very thin. You can always put it in a setting that protects the girdle.

Have any pictures?

congratulations!! (?)
with old cuts, a lot, I mean a huge amount, of “if it’s worth it” relates to performance and visual appeal. Can you show pictures?
Plus - there’s usually wiggle room in listed prices, and possibly even more if the vendor does the mounting.

nicely performing and great looking antique old mine cuts are not easy to find/ dime a dozen.

not that many antique old cuts don’t have any chips. Some are refurbished to take chips out. Chip ajoining to a feather is different than “just” a feather or just a chip. Where the feathers are and where they break the surface at is also is a consideration. You’ll find posters (and vendors) here with differing opinions and comfort levels on whether they are compromising integrity and deal breakers or not.
I took a risk with a couple of feathers, and it’s been worthwhile - so far. absolutely passed on another stone with a chip/feather combination that was too far past comfort level.
on that note - you can trust this vendor but you still should verify what they say either with your own eyes, someone with plenty of old cut experience, or use a third party neutral appraiser. I’ve been there. no vendor should be put off by the ‘trust but verify’ motto.

but again - unfortunately no one is going to be able to definitely tell you ‘that feather will shear off down the line with wear’ nor ‘that absolutely will not become worse with wear’.

Also if down the line it cracked or got a larger chip is that something insurance would cover?
i don’t think all insurance policies are the same. Even within the same company from policy to policy. Do your diligence in reading the fine print.

Still would love to see the stone
did you get to look at it with a loupe? It’s good you couldn’t feel it with your fingernail.

edited to add:
if having this vendor set the stone, you can also ask them if they guaranty the stone while they are setting it. I can’t remember if they do or not?
3rd party jeweler probably can’t and wont.

Based on all the extra facets and the girdle size its extremely likely this stone has had extensive repairs/work. So why was the chip not fixed??

From what I am hearing insurance companies are tightening up and could claim it had prior damage to get out of a claim.
For the right stone that chance may be worth it but it really bugs me that the chip has not been repaired with the rest of the work.

Is it the faceted girdle that is tipping you off here Karl? The thickness doesn’t seem totally out of whack for old cuts.

OP we need pictures here!

It would have been bruted and smaller when cut.

Hi everyone! Sorry I missed all the new responses - I only have a few pictures. We did move forward and purchase the stone - we are working on designing a three stone ring now with it being the center. It’s the stone all the way to the left- I have a video but I’m not sure how to attach it here.

We are working with Adam at Old World Diamonds - I had him look at the stone and the chip and he said it’s so microscopic he couldn’t even capture it on camera. He’s been so great to work with!
