I'm happy to finally be able to share my set with you all! Let me start off by saying that I discovered Mark Morrell and his beautiful settings about 5-6 years ago, and searching for any and all real life pictures of his rings led me to Pricescope. I fell head over heals for the Petite Torchiere. Unfortunately a Mark Morrell setting wasn't in the cards for me when I got married, however I did receive a very beautiful vintage platinum wedding set from the 1930s or 1940s. I love that set to death, but I was never able to forget about the Petite Torchiere. A few months ago we found ourselves in the position to be able to afford my dream set! After getting that green light, I set off on my diamond hunt.
I was originally looking at stones on Blue Nile, and I even found a few that I thought could be good candidates, but I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger for a couple of reasons. First, there were no photos or ASETs, and second, I've always been fond of old cuts. I grew up admiring my grandmother's set which features a beautiful OEC that came from my great-grandmother's engagement ring, and also my mother's OMB center stone. I was sure I'd never be able to afford an older cut within the parameters I wanted and that also fell into my budget, but I was wrong! David from Good Old Gold was the greatest. He helped me find a nice M colored stone, but after I bought it I realized it was much more shallow than I would have liked. After getting some guidance from some wonderful PSers, I decided to take a chance on a 1.43 S-T colored OEC. I was able to exchange for it no problem. Now, I'm not color sensitive at all. In fact I prefer warmth over colorless, but I'd never considered a stone so low on the color scale. I was a little worried about how it would look set in platinum, but checking out some other PSer's very warm stones eased my mind. I loved the look!
After finding the stone, I got in touch with Mark. I'd worked with him once before on an anniversary band so I knew that he's a joy to work with and that his pieces are absolutely perfect. I asked if he could make me a Petite Torchiere with no taper in the shank and a matching platinum band. No problem! He estimated a 6-week lead time, but to my happy surprise it only took 4! After an eternity (2 days) it finally arrived, and it's perfect! I absolutely love the creamy vanilla color. Here are some pictures. I'm sorry if they're not the greatest, my DSLR is packed somewhere so I used my phone and a loupe. Hopefully soon I can get it out and take some better pictures.
