I just bought a beautiful Mahenge spinel from Prima Gems and thought I'd start a thread about it even though I just posted in the "Show Me Your Mahenge" thread, too.

Details:

1.87 carats
7.3 mm round x 5 mm deep
Eye-clean despite how it looks in the macro vendor pic

While I LOVE it, I'm interested to see what the experts here think. Honest opinions are welcome, though I'm pretty much already sold on keeping it because it takes my breath away IRL. Still, sometimes it's nice to compare what you think is great to what the standard "ideal" is.

Here's what Jaimeen said about the inclusion, cut, and color:

"First of all, let me tell you that I couldn't even capture half the beauty of this stone on camera. The saturation of the color and the brilliance of the cutting just isn't showing up on the camera. But the picture should definitely give you a fair idea of what the stone looks like. The color is the top color that Mahenges produce. If viewed by a loupe, you will notice a tiny hair-like wave in the middle of the stone which of course the camera has exaggerated. The inclusion is just about large enough to prove that it is a natural stone and small enough to where it is invisible from most angles."

I don't see the inclusion with my naked eye. The stone is a bit difficult to photograph. IRL, it is a hot hot pink in incandescent lighting, turning more red in sunlight. It glows strongly under the black light, and it's one of the more unusual gems I've seen in how it performs so well in very, very low lighting despite the fact that it's well-saturated and not a pale stone. If there's any light at all, the stone catches it and looks almost neon pink.

The first 2 pics are from Jaimeen and the others are mine, sitting by a window on a very overcast thunderstormy morning.

One more pic, in which you can see a slight tilt window.

The most important thing is that you love it and that's what counts! You don't need our opinions! Enjoy it and please post photos if you have it set in a piece of jewellery.

Nice and big!! I love it!

I LOVE it!!! I'm a sucker for Mahenges, and I think it's a beautiful colour. And a large round, to boot!

Tara! Congratulations!! Beautiful stone! The color is ideal, and I love the cut. Look at the amazing PoP of the first hand shot. My experience has been that you will not notice the inclusion unless you are holding it less than 6 inches from you face. And, once set, you will not notice any tilt window. :appl:

It looks better on your hand than in his photos. The cutting looks good and its so saturated it pops and glows!

I wish I could find one like yours but with the vivid red like Chrono's or TL's, but they have long since been all snapped up. :errrr:

Jaimeen is a good vendor for Tanzanian gemstones whose stones look better in person that pictures. It sounds like a very saturated spinel that will garner plenty of compliments. More pics, please!

Wow...really nice stone!! Overall, I am not a big fan of Mahenge Spinels, as I don't really like sleepy stones in general, nor do I like small stones, included stones, etc. You overcame all my Mahenge-objections with that stone...great job!! On top of that, you found a round....wow...that adds a ton of value, in my opinion. Great job finding a great stone!

It is beautiful!

Based on your hand shot, it looks like a keeper. Congratulations! :appl:

it looks very pretty. your photos are much better than the vendor pics imho. what are your plans for setting it?

Congratulations! I love the round red Mahenge that I got from Jaimeen, so I KNOW yours must be a beauty. Jaimeen is very honest with his descriptions of his stones (IMHO).

AMAZING

I wish I had a Mahenge like that

Ohhh, I love it! That's exactly the kind of Mahenge I am hoping to scoop up one day.

Ditto. Not a mahenge spinel fan here but this one's so pretty

It's gorgeous! Love that glowy pink color

Sooooo - has this one been set yet?

athenaworth: It has and it's now my favorite piece of jewelry that I've ever owned! (..though the e-ring might win out on sentimentality) I had Daniel M make me one of his sliding bezel halo pendants. I upgraded the diamonds from 1 pointers to 1.5/ea, which made a big difference in it looking balanced with the size of the spinel. I also had the whole thing done in platinum.

I have not wanted to share pics here, especially lately, with all the discussion of inaccurate pictures and criticisms of people claiming their stones are better IRL... but, this one really is. So I'll post Caren's pic, but know that I'm not happy with how her pics portray the Mahenge. It is NOT raspberry-purpley IRL, and it doesn't have problems with large blotches of extinction. It's definitely neon reddish pink. Jaimeen called it top color (yes, I know, he's the vendor), and while it's not the primarily-red version of Mahenge like Chrono's, it is bright, screaming-hot pink that goes more red in sunlight. Warm-toned, not cool-toned. But, alas, I can't get good pics of any of my stuff, and her pics show it as much less attractive than it really is.

So, with those major caveats:

It's stunning. And if its even better in real life - ooo la la!

Wow, a neato slider! I love the hot pink Mahenges too. Now....where are those neck shots?

Ohhhhhh. I saw this on the etsy site and thought it was gorgeous! I like how the diamond bezel looks continuous and makes the center stone really pop. Well done. I second the request for neck shots.

I remember seeing that on DanielM's sold section and drooling. I always know that DM's pics are going to be a bit off in color so I assume that if it's amazing in DM's pics that it's AAAAMMMAAAZZZIIINNNG in real life. Are you at all sad that you don't get to look at it on your hand??

I don't have any neck shots (I'm camera-shy and hate even showing my hands here, as my 'manicure', such as it is, is non-existent), but your requests have been duly noted! :)

Sometimes I do wish it were always available on my hand to drool over, but I'm sooo glad I got it in a pendant. I don't tend to wear a ton of rings and am pretty loyal to my current rings.

Prior to setting this one in a pendant, I got Daniel M to make a pink tourmaline version for my Mom. It was a very sentimental project that I posted about here, and she was thrilled with it. Once I saw it dancing on her neck all the time, and how her stone shot back a beam of pink that was really eye-catching (to the point of distracting me from what I was saying at times), I knew I had to have that effect for myself. When I'm wearing this pendant, and I catch myself in the mirror, my eyes go straight to it, like a big pink beacon. Strangers are constantly staring at it. So I like that pendants seem to be more eye-catching than rings, and it draws attention to my neck and collarbones, which I find more attractive than my hands.

I think I just admitted to being an "attention-ho"

So you're the lucky owner of this! I've been drooling it on his site for a long time!!!!

Ya know, I totally get that. It's almost like your beautiful piece is being a bit sly and you get a peek of it when it wants you to. (Did I just reveal too much about myself??) I'm excited for a neck shot so we can all stare and drool.

Sooooo gorgeous!!!!! I can see why it is your favorite jewelry piece. :)

Thank you for all of the lovely comments! The stone in my avatar is the Mahenge, so just transpose that color into the DanielM pendant, and you'll have it about right :)
