Hello, I need a longer chain for a pendant my aunt in law gave to me for our wedding. She got the pendant at Costco---it''s heart shaped and as small diamonds in it. Now the only issue, I have a big neck...16" is a choker on me. So I need an 18" chain.

So I''ve found several wg chains I like but I notice they vary significantly in price. Are there any differences in them or should I just get the least expensive one?

I saw a 14k wg chain on Wink Jones''s website, Kay Jewelers, and Overstock. They all vary significantly so I don''t know which is better. I want the one that will be better in quality, but I can''t tell since they all have the same clasps and look.

Thanks!

check the width of the chains. maybe their diameter is different thus the difference in pricing.

Hmmm. The one at Kay''s and Winks are both 1.3mm. The overstock one doesn''t list...

Have you tried JCPenney- I just walked passed them the other day, and they had some "everyday value" chains and I think they were quite inexpensive. I usually buy online for many things and bought chains online as well, I wish I would have gone out to try them on and seen them in person before I did.

ETA: one of my best chain i bought was from a department store for quite a good price (with the sales and discount ad), whereas others I saw online was more and not sure if i would have liked it, even though its just a box chain.

That sounds like a good deal. I just wonder what is the difference between the quality of the metals. I''m going to bet there is no difference for Kays and Overstock...I don''t know much about how it is alloyed and how it might effect price.

there is a company named leslie that guarantees their gold chains. check out their site.

eta: i checked their site and they have 18inch wheat chains in white gold in many different thicknesses. the guarantee is if they break for any reason they will replace. you can't order directly from them you need to find a store who can get them for you.

I just checked and I recently bought a chain (white gold) from Goldspeed.com. I bought a 16" chain in 18K gold because I had been planning to buy a tiny diamond cross and needed a chain on which to wear it (I thought). This would go under the heading of, "Man proposes; God disposes". ;-)

As you can see from the website, the white gold wheat chains vary a lot in price based on the thickness and weight of the chain.

Wheat chains are my favorite style of chain. There are a few things I look for when buying a chain.
1-does it have lobster style clasp? Is the clasp soldered shut?Is the clasp too large for the chain and will it be in thr front of your neck all the time?
2 gram weight and what im paying per gram(be careful about stores that offer 50,60,70% off sales they are still overpriced in the end...these are fake mark downs)
3-origin..America,Turkey,Canada, Italy are common on the market.I prefer Italian or American made chain.
4-purity- is it 10,14,18 karat
5-Is the chain guarenteed? by the store or manufature?(I have sold and own chain from Leslie Co. and would recommend them)

D&T, crown1, agbf, and jewelryman! Thank you all for your help!

Now this Leslie Company...does it have a website?

Also jewelryman...your breakdown helps ALOT. What is the difference between the clasps? I''ve mostly seen lobster claw and seen several of the Italian made chains. The current 16" chain is lobster claw and is made in Italy (14k). When I was a kid I remember seeing mostly made in Mexico and after a few years they''d all have this bluish film on it or black spots...
