Hi everyone,

My wife is selling her 2.8 TCW Brian Gavin studs, and I can't find any comparables on their website. They are J/K, 1.38 and 1.42 carats each, VS2, full certs and whatnot.

The closest comparables I can find are a set of 2.5 TCW VS1/VS2 (both J) for $17,200 and and a set of 3.03 TCW J/K (but VS2/VVS1) for $27,400.

I am thinking hers would likely be around $18,000 to $19,000 at retail, cash price, but am not sure.

If they are at $19,000, what would be an reasonable 2nd-party price to ask?

Thanks in advance!

I would price them at about 30% off retail. Given the amount of money involved, you could use an escrow service to facilitate the sale.

Thanks! Any escrow services that are recommended?

I have bought and sold probably $700k worth of cars sight unseen, but a car always has a title and condition can be verified by an independent shop. I don't know the process for jewelry (I have purchased Rolexes from verified 3rd parties on TRF at similar dollar amounts to what I would list the earrings for).

Neil Beaty is a trusted appraiser who posts here who offers escrow services.

Yes, I have used Neil before when buying a diamond second hand from someone else. He did the appraisal for me, but I sent the bank wire to the person because they were on PS and trustworthy. Then Neil sent me the diamond. But the escrow service is a safe and excellent way for both parties to complete a sale. You'd likely have to send the diamonds to him in advance of listing them, because if you use USPS Registered Mail (the only safe way for an individual to send something worth over $5000), it could take a week or so to get there. I believe he did ship the diamond to me using whatever insured shipping method he uses, and I probably paid for shipping to me and the appraisal. It's been a few years.

Whiteflash has some good comps.

1.43 J VS2 $9264 wire
1.41 K VS2 $7660 wire

So $16,924 cash retail (or maybe $16,850 since your K is 1.38 )

I think superideal cut stones will sell for more than generic stones, so I'd probably start out pricing 15% below the retail amount above. I would hope you could get 80-85%, although a J-K combo might go for a little less. Good luck with your sale!

Thanks for the great info!

I am going to post them locally on our members-only facebook page for high-end goods (great place for fine jewelry, Herman Miller, and Louboutin) but most of the wealthy people in this area have established relationships with high-end jewelers, so I don't expect much traction.

All that means is that those customers are paying $35k for a set of studs that aren't even AGS000, much less superideal. My wife tried on a set of 6.1 TCW studs in H color that were definitely not AGS000 grade (although still very nice) and they were priced at $320k at one of those stores!

Definitely put them on the Pricescope pre-loved forum. I don't know if 15% off is enough for takers but its a place to start!
