Hi All, quick question for y'all ...2 carat G color or 2.5 carat J color round brilliant? Looking at ideal cuts with VS clarity. Were fortunate to be able to look at these and are debating size versus color at this 2+ carat range. thanks for any opinions.

Well, color will show more as the carat size increases.... so if you are slightly color sensitive, a 2.5 J may be too much color for you.

Some will tell you that a J faces up white and to go for bigger carat size.... others will say that a 2.5 J will have too much color and a 2 ct G is a great size color combination.

It depends on size of finger, sensitively to color, average diamond size for your area and your perception to an acceptable size.

Best advice given, go to a local jeweler and ask to see two stones of comparable size- one a G and one a J. see how you feel. If you honestly can't see any color in the J.... then it's a toss up. Make sure to work with a vendor with a good upgrade policy incase you take the G and years down the road wish for a 2.5+ ct size RB.... and a great return policy incase you take the J and think it's too warm for your taste. Your eye and judgement is the best tool

Excellent advice from Amy. I have a 1.5 J, and I love it ... but I'm an oddity in that I can see the warmth, and I still like it more than any colorless stone I've ever seen. If you're really torn, why not go for something like a 2.25 H with medium fluorescence, and split the difference? :rodent:

I would go with a 2 ct G rather than the 2.5 J. For one reason, if you ever decided to upgrade a G is easier to sell, especially at the sweet spot of 2 carats. Going with a lower color grade is a personal choice. I could be wrong but I think the majority of people find G much more appealing than J.

I'd rather have the 2 ct. G. I've mentioned before that I'm color sensitive, and I know the J would be too warm for my taste. I think Amy's advice to try to see a G and a J in the same or similar size to gauge how you feel, and also her advice about the upgrade and return policies.

For me it would be a J. But I don't mind the lower colours. You would have to look at both to decide. Mara has a beautiful J which is over 2 carats. Have a look at her pictures to get an idea...

There are loads of pictures throughout the thread.

I believe Lynn B has a J too...

This - it is definitely personal choice. I, like Circe, am enjoying the tint in my J - it has a home in a slightly yellow metal, and I actually *prefer* it to my E in a white metal setting..

The tradeoffs. Wife currently has a j color, si, round that is just under 2 carats and we're thinking about upgrading. The j thing has always bugged me ... perhaps from reading too much in here ;) ... and i'm thinking it would be nice to move more towards the colorless spectrum. Call it ego, call it what you want. On the other hand, she kinda agrees but she's prob more of a size matters person. Hence, why we have the j color now. the one we have now is a good cut but a little dark. I'd like to get something that has a lot of icy fireness and sparkle. Maybe i'm just crazy. ;)

I would go for the "J"ust right color - but that is my personal preference.

Are you going to set this stone in a yellow gold or white gold/platinum setting? That can be a factor when it comes to color...
