Sorry for posting a "gold" question here, but I''ve nowhere else to turn. I used this forum in my quest for an engagement ring about 2 years ago - and was quite satisfied. The time has come for me to pick out my first ring - a wedding band. The one that I''m most interested in is a 24k "hammered" gold band. My question: Is 24k gold really "too soft" for a ring that will be worn every day for 40 or 50 years (with any luck)? If generally so, will the "hammered" finish make any difference (i.e. Is the concern with 24k gold only valid if the goal is to keep the ring shiny and smooth)? Thank you in advance for your help.

I am Chinese so I know all about 24K gold. DON''t DO IT!
So many bands made in 24K I see are already anything but round. 3 out of 4 I have I only wore on occations, and are already bend! Of course if you have a ring inlayed with platinum then it will stay in shape.

Yup, don''t do it. I have some 24K gold earrings... the posts are totally bent. It''s not so much nicks and things as actually BENDING.

What about 22k? I wonder if that would work. But 18K is probably safest.
