My engagement ring has a 3.4 carat old mine cut diamond on a beautiful antique-style platinum setting. The stone is over 100 yrs old and is sentimentally invaluable as well as very valuable $. I have been wearing it for less than two years and in that time, the stone has come loose three times – it has not fallen out of the setting, but has come loose and moves around in the prongs. I have talked to the jeweler about this issue and she says that it is happening because the stone is so large and has a few tiny chips on it, so it is wearing down the platinum. i am beginning to doubt the craftsmanship on the setting of the ring, along with the ethics of the jeweler. any thoughts....

Hi Jen, welcome to Pricescope! Your ring sounds very beautiful and special. My advice is to take it to another jeweler for a 2nd opinion if you are not satisfied with the response you got from the current jeweler. If it is too big for the setting, you may need to look into getting it replaces, or maybe at least the head. It would help to know what kind of setting you have. Can you post any pictures of it? I'd hate for this problem to be mis diagnosed by anyone, only for you to have it fall out on you one day.

Keep asking until you get some results.

I agree w/Kmom, Jen, get a second opinion. The OMC is too beautiful a cut to lose! It happens to be one of my favorite cuts.

Your ring sounds wonderful! May you always wear it in health and happiness!

BTW, welcome to PS!

And you surely have a good reason. Is the setting new? If it is and was not custom made for your stone, chances are the shape of the diamond departs enough from the size/proportions of the round briliant for which the settings most likely was made, that it simply does not fit. How about having a setting made for your stone? It surely sounds like worth the trouble

I agreee I would check out opinions of other jewelers...there should be a way to fix the setting so that it matches the diamond and does not come loose...

Is the setting an antique as well...does it have sentimental value...if not perhaps a new setting...

It would be shame to loose you beautiful stone

Thanks for your replies. unfortunately i do not have a picture of the ring. but it is a new setting. and i really love the design - it's diamond crusted ribbons that cross just before the center stone and the diamond is set low in a basket four- prong setting. you may be right, the setting may be made for a more modern stone, and mine being old may be shaped slightly differently. i am going to get a second opinion from another jeweler this week.

ideally, i would like the jeweler who made the setting to completely reset the ring in an totally new (but the same design) setting. The first time the stone came loose, she said that she made the prongs thicker, but maybe since the ring has been adjusted a few times, it would be better to start over from scratch....
