Hi Everyone
I have been here on and off for a while and folks have always given me GREAT advice on my stones and ring. Well, i have a new question.

This is regarding a 3 stone engagement ring. What is the right/best proportions for sides stone vs. center?
My current sides are .60 total so .30 each.

My center is a gorgeous ACA from whiteflash that is 1.087.

My question is, normally when i see 3 stones online the sides are smaller - and the center is 1 and the center REALLY stands out from the two sides. This is the look i like best, i prefer the center to really stand out vs blend with the sides.

I plan to upgrade my center to a larger one - one day and i am wondering, seeing my sides are .30 each, how big should my center really be so its stands out from them?

for example, if you look at this - the center really stands out and the sides are small.

So, seeing my sides are .3 each, how large does my center need to be to get this same efffect? I am sure its a math equation that you are better at then me.

And, yes, my hope is to get another ACA with Whiteflash will ALL the correct specs. So the size you all ballpark will tell me how long it will take me to save the money. LOL

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i hope this makes sense.

Can you post a picture of your current ring/setting?

I had another thread on here when i got the ACA but i figured i should start a new one for this new topic? hope thats right.

Either way, I plan to upgrade the ACA to a larger one that will give me the same effect as the ring i showed (or close to it). So was curious from you all how large my new center would need to be to get me there.

Thanks in advance for those who will chime in on this.

I ALSO dont know if perhaps i have the new setting changed where the center SITS HIGHER, so maybe that would also help differentiate it from the two sides.

Dont get me wrong, my aca is to die for, I love it. I just feel its blends a lot with my sides.

The other thing i could do is get a solitaire and have my sides made into earrings but i am not sure on that..............

I love the simplicity of a solitaire but i also fear, i would miss the sides stones? and extra bling there......

Then again, if you all say, well you really need about a 2ct to get the effect you are looking for THEN i may just get a solitaire - lol

There is no right or wrong answer to this as it is all based on personal preference. Your current ring is beautiful as is and you could go up to 1.50-1.70 and still have a beautiful ring! Just depends on the look you are aiming for and of course the pesky budget. The ring you posted from Brilliant Earth features an oval diamond which of course will produce a different look than a round diamond. ACA diamonds are only available in round and Princess cut.
My side stones are .33 each with a 2.53 ACA center. This setting has also held a 2.00 diamond of which I do not have pictures.

It can be difficult to go from a three stone to a solitaire but always doable of course. You can also upgrade incrementally and not all at once. I would just wear and enjoy your new ring and give yourself time to think about the proportions you want. Most larger upgrades have taken place over many years as other things take priority while raising a family, etc. Never hurts to dream but don’t task yourself with trying to figure it all out right now - your current ring was an upgrade and is fairly new!

Hi there!! thank you so much! i was hoping you may chime in as your ring is TO DIE FOR and the size differences between the sides and center are amazing. hmmmm. OK lots to think about.

That is the difference i am hoping to achieve, i was just hoping it would not be SO big. LOL. What i mean is, us being able to afford a 2.53 aca is just not possible.

Sigh.........

The most i could probably swing is going to a 1.5 or maybe higher but i'd probably have to change to a G instead of an F. Which, i know would likely not impact performance too much.

I wish i could "see" what it would look like - a 1.5 center with my .3's -

for those that have looked at a 1000 rings, Would the 1.5 stand out enough or would it still blend?

i tried to find a design you own thing online where i could pick the sizes of each but i couldn't find one.

yes, great point! Thank you again!

I am not home right now but you can look at WF website and find diameter dimensions of a 1.5 diamond. You can draw it out on paper with the dimensions of a .30 to try to get an idea of size.

You are going to need a really large stone to have the look of 5 pointers next to a 1 carat.

So here's my math...hoping someone will double-check it for me.

Let me see if I can do this right...

The setting you linked has 1/10 carat side stones or 5 pointers.

5 pointers are 2.5mm
1 carat center stone is about 6.45 mm

So, 2.5mm/6.45mm = approximately 39%. The sides are approximately 39% of the center.

30 pointers are 4.25 mm

4.25mm/X mm = .39 (formula to figure out center stone size)

Start solving for X by Multiply both sides by X mm

4.25 mm = .39X mm

Divide both sides by .39 to isolate the X

4.25 mm/.39 = approximate 10.9mm center stone

10.9 mm center stone is approximately 4.7/4.8 carats (using diamdb)

So you would need around a 4.7ish carat stone to get the same look using .3 side stones.

Ok, where is @yessie or some other math person to double-check my math?

Now you can laugh hysterically at the size you'll need to get those proportions!

BTW, I think @MissGotRocks proportions are lovely...really nice finger coverage but lets the center stone do most of the talking.
The side stones dont blend but accentuate the center stone.

You can use this tool to get somewhat of an idea of sizing. You kind of have to use your imagination.

thank you for this!!! seeing the .3 next to a 1.5 here is VERY HELPFUL!
Not as amazing as MissGotRocks but still, gorgeous nonetheless :)

Thank you, i'll remember to use this tool when the time comes.

I saved this image years ago from here…gives you an idea of the various ratios.

Thank you! This is all so great. You guys have helped me a lot.

I think our budget will allow me to shoot for a 1.5, we will see.

Probably can't do much for a bit as we need to save but this at least gives me a target to shoot for.

Thank you again!

Are you against sourcing smaller sidestones as well when you upgrade to a larger center? I think that might overall ‘help’ you achieve the overall aesthetic you are going for, easier and quicker.

this is super unscientific and a guesstimate - so take it with a heap of salt. Just a ballpark visual idea of adding 1mm or 2.
the sides, usually, would also be moved - but here they are not.

A 1.5 carat stone is about 7.5 mm right? Nice visual @Rfisher!

The link for the 3-stone settings that you provided in your first post has that exact feature you’ve been looking for. You could adjust the size of 2 side diamonds and the size of the center stone up to 2 carats to see which has the look you’re looking for.

I’m not sure if this helps since the center is a little bigger but here is 2.14 center and .43 sides, just for proportion. IMG_0998.jpeg
