OK ladies, I am in a discussion with myself:

As some of you know, I lost my original engagement ring (kind of a Diana style sapphire with a diamond halo similar to my avatar). Long story, suffice to say that I am an idiot....

So my goal has been for the past 2 years to replace it.....little bit of an upgrade but nothing so scary that SWEET DH would take much note of.

So Jeff White has been searching for rough for me, and it sounds like he's ready to start cutting....problem is, I had mentioned one day in a fit of weakness after seeing a cushion on this site, that, er, maybe...hmmm....should I change the original design even more, like, from an oval to a cushion?

YIKES there goes the plan out the window!

I'll post below the pic of the setting that Whiteflash has quoted for me. The stone will be about 8mm x 10mm give or take, so maybe a 2.5-3.0 carat sapphire centre.

I'll attach a pic of the original upgrade for your thoughts....

So the question is: after longing to replace my original e-ring with something even more beautiful (yet similar!) do I now rethink things and go cushion????

Opinions please before Jeff fires up the equipment!

Thanks

Which shape does Jeff think will best showcase the material?

Hi Harriet.

He didn't say, as I had originally said "OVAL PLEASE"...but then I saw this (and I apologize but I can't remember the User who belongs to this stunner!) and I am second guessing myself.....

Knowing myself as I do, I am best to stick with the original plan. The upgrade was significantly more spectacular, but with a few tweaks, including the baguettes....

It's only the stone shape I'm interested in. The setting with this cushion is stupendous but I'm not a pave girl and I think I'd prefer a simpler setting for myself.

But I am interested to hear opinions of oval vs. cushion and why....What the heck, it's Friday and a beautiful day here in Canuck-Land!

I think that ring belongs to Missgotrocks.

I don't have a preference for ovals over cushions or vice versa. I've bought gems of both shapes simply because they had the best colour.

YES Harriet, you are absolutely right! That IS MissGotRocks stunner! I don''t know why when I saved the pic I didn''t save it with her screen name. I LOVE that ring! But my style is probably more simple. I wore my sapphire in cut off jeans and t-shirt as well as with evening wear and it always seemed to work for me....When I envision the cushion I can''t seem to make the simple halo/baguette style of the original pic work in my head....

Even thinking about it now, I am reminded that I wore the oval for 20 years and have been longing for it since I lost it. The entire time I had it there was not an inkling of "wanting to change it up".

So this is probably my gut talking to me....maybe a cushion is in my future for a RH ring. And in the meantime I should stick with what my heart is telling me.

But I''m always fascinated as to why different gem shapes attract different people.

Sounds like you have an answer. Good luck! You''re in great hands with Jeff.

It''s MissRocks. She has such a gorgeous ring!

There is no comparison between Jeff''s cut and the native cuts I see on various jeweler''s sites. This guy knows what he is doing. when 16 pavilion facets meet to within 5 microns (yes I''m a science geek), you win.

The DAY I saw a Jeff White sapphire I was hooked for life.

I am really excited to see how it turns out!

I mean, look at this!!!

Compare the cut of this one to the one I posted at the very top (ie: the setting I want but NOT that sapphire!)

WHOA GIANT BRAINSTORM: who can photoshop this stone into the setting I posted? any takers?

Say it ain''t so, Jeff, that my ring is ready?????

WOW that''s what I''m looking for!!

Wow...ask and ye shall find! That photoshop job HAS to answer the question for you, right???? That oval in your new setting is absolutely droolworthy!

Jeff, can I hijack the image and make it my avatar?

oh no I tried it and it's squished...going to have to work on that a bit first I guess.

Thanks!

yuck that''s worse.

I''ll keep trying

Worse yet. I''m going to go have a coffee and try it again.

LOL, it''s not THAT bad. Just a little more elongated than IRL. Still love it!

YAY the coffee worked!

I got it!

This should work. Trimmed off a bit of the band to keep the original oval shape. Beautiful ring, BTW.

ETA: Oh, I see you got it while I was working on it.

I like yours better, the sapphire is nice and fat like I like it.

Will try and grab it and substitute....

thanks!

GOT IT! THAT'S EVEN BETTER!

YIPPEEEEEEEE

i''m not much of a halo fan but that oval with the whatever sides is absolutley gorgeous.

Good morning MZ.

I''m not a halo fan either, really....this doesn''t feel the same somehow. Maybe it''s the baguettes and how the diamonds are set that makes it work for me.

My first e-ring had prongs on the outside of each of the diamonds. I prefer this one.

and good morning to you!

i really like the break in the circle of diamonds.....in fact, i don''t actually think of it as a halo but a south>!

i think this setting has a timeless quality to it......

I''ll be VERY interested to see your stone, LS! I wish he could find one for me, but he may think I am too picky on clarity. I hope yours turns out to be perfect!!!

Maybe I'd have it faster if he wasn't so busy showing off with PhotoShop!!

I am really in no great rush, so Jeff isn't under a deadline to find me something this VERY minute. But it sounds like we're getting close!

I showed the photoshopped (thank you Jeff!!!) ring to Sweet DH today (this is the first he's known about the project) and he was very impressed. Though I might have to work a bit to sell him on the baguette/diamond bezel setting. He didn't go WOW like I thought he would but it always seems to take him a while to visualize things.

Hi,

I am happy for you, it is a lot of fun to work on a jewelry project, especially one to replace your lost sapphire. I think what you are planning looks great and I cannot wait to see the real thing!

HOLY MOLEY, that would be a STUNNING ring!!!!!!!
