4.5 ct antique EC set in quartz -- question about sizing?

I am posting on behalf of a friend of mine who recently purchased an amazing ring from Grace (originally commissioned by Siegleson's in NYC). The ring features a gorgeous 4.5. ct antique emerald cut set in rose quartz. Unfortunately the ring is about 1/2 to 1 full size too small. We're wondering if there is any chance some of the quartz could be ground down to make it larger? So far we haven't had much luck getting any answers. Would appreciate any input or direction! Thanks!
