Well, since I obtained my 2.8 ct, I've always wanted another spinel like it. This one is very close, albeit slightly darker in tone due to the larger size no doubt. It has a small needle, but I can't see it unless I loupe it or take a macro photo. I'm glad it's there actually to show it's natural. It's a huge stone, and my largest spinel to date!

The cutting is wonderful as exemplified by this face down photo. Look at all those facets! That's fuzz on the stone from the container cotton.

Here it is in the morning next to my 2.8 carat oval, and you can see the difference in tone here, but this stone is NOT extinct at all. It sparkles like mad, and I would say it's a medium tone.

My green diamond is waving!! ;))

Incandescent light, look at those blue flashes and the same photo from further away.

Very pretty, TL! It's gonna look great when set.

A mid day shot showing more blue.

My God, it is HUGE! And I love the shift of colors! It is a stunner!

I love how the colour shifts, another gorgeous stone.

Gorgeous colour!
Does it exhibit a bow tie effect at all? I know this topic (ie ovals & bow ties) was discussed in another thread, but I just wanted to know if your Portuguese cut oval showed a bow tie effect in certain lighting conditions..

TL,
We have twin violet spinels except yours is a smidge larger! It’s exactly the same violet to purple shift and your larger 4 carat spinel looks richer in saturation compared to your smaller 2.8 carat blue. Congrats on a wonderfully lucky purchase.

Vigor,
I don’t recall seeing a bow tie in Portuguese cut ovals…

Lovely stone!!!

That is a big, beautiful stone. You need to take me stone shopping with you, the color is awesome. Will it be a ring?

Beautiful spinels. Love the color shift and the sparkle must be awesome. :cheeky:

WOW - I would love to see that in person!

Do you mean portuguese cut is generally a good cut for avoiding the bow tie effect in oval stones?
(I like ovals, but don't really like bow ties, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. :read: )

I am sooo jealous of TL's gorgeous spinels!!! :cheeky:

Virgoruby,
To be honest, I don’t know if it is definitive that a Portuguese cut oval removes the possibility of bow ties but only that I have not personally seen any exhibiting this quality. This is a good question to ask the lapidaries. Count me in as another member who is jealous of TL’s violet spinels, especially this new one.

How did I miss this?

That is one gorgeous spinel, TL.

Now your other spinel has a friend....! :D

<~~~~~ SoOoo jealous here! now that you have your big one, wanna donate the smaller one to me? i promise to take good care of it and love it! :cheeky: The 4ct is definitely more saturated... and so sparkly!

Be still my beating heart! What a gorgeous spinel and that size :o

That is a lovely HUGE spinel!!! It will make a statement as a ring, that is for sure!!!

TL, I've always loved your 2.8 violet it's lovely halo setting, but this spinel is simply amazing! It has it's own personality and I'm really drawn to the colour. And the size. :naughty:

Any ideas for settings yet?

Ok - so now I'm confused but in lurveeeeeeeee with your new spinel!

What colour is it???? Is it blue, violet or purple. I can't work it out because the photos look so different!

LD,
I believe it to be a colour change/shift spinel that goes from purple indoors to violetish blue outdoors.

JewelFreak, Thanks!!
Crasru, Thanks!!
Lovinggems, Thanks!!
Vigorruby, No bow tie that I could discern. Thanks!!
Chrono, Thanks!! I love your spinel so much, well ALL your spinels!
SCN, Thanks!!
Treenbean, Thanks!! Of course it will be a ring. ;))
Flygirl, Thanks!! I do love the sparkle and luster on this stone.
Cellentani, Thanks!! I wish you could take photos of it in person too!
Aoife, I just added this and two other spinels to my collection, so it has three more friends! Thanks!!
Fortekitty, Thanks!! I'm not planning on making donations though.
Davi, Thanks!!
Cind11, Thanks!! I love huge stones, so I'm hoping it will make a statement.
LTP, Thanks!! No halos for this one because I think it will look like the big sister to my 2.8 ct, and I would like the setting for this to be a bit different.
LD, Thanks!! Chrono is correct, it's a blue/violet in daytime and more of a purple at night.

OMG, LOVE IT. I think the color is scrumptious

Wow! It's very, very pretty!!

Enjoy!

Thanks Laila, and MissDebby!!

Gorgeous spinel! I love the color shift, and the cutting looks really nice.

Okay, seriously, TL, you and I have to have a spinel-buying party, because I have not managed to find even one gorgeous violet/blue spinel, and you are accumulating them like crazy.

So where are the photos of the other spinels you just bought, hmm? :?:

Thanks Jstar

Well, I obtained a very beautiful precision cut lavender/pink spinel pear of 2.5 carats that I set in a rose gold setting with micropave all over the place, but I haven't shown in on PS yet. I'm also hoping to receive a nice size, vivid, very clean and well cut Mahenge shortly, and if it looks anything like the photos, well, I'm going to be very very very happy! Yes, I have been on a spinel feeding frenzy, haven't I?

Okay, just one photo of the new lavender pink, but you can't see the top of it!!
