I've been a silent lurker for a few weeks now, and I finally decided to come out of the shadows. I've browsed so many forums, and looked at so many beautiful diamonds and rings, I'm high. So addictictive, I don't get much done. Anyways, I would like some input from fellow PS'ers. My husband recently bought me a beautiful diamond as an upgrade for our 30th wedding anniversary. However, we were having difficulties finding a setting that we both like...until I discovered the Memoire purity rings while daydreaming on this site! So, now we know the setting, and we've made contact with Pearlman's to get quotes ( thanks again, I found out about Pearlman's through this site). Now, I'm confused about prongs for the diamond. Do I get four or six prongs? The diamond is I.8 ct. H, RB, triple ex, IF. IS it just a safety thing or aesthetics? I value everyone's opinion, so,please let me know.

I normally prefer 6 for a round because I think it helps emphasize the round shape.

6 prong should be more secure but in the end it shouldn't really matter. Just go with whatever your preference is.

I used to have a 4 prong setting and recently switched to 6 prongs, and prefer the new look. But I've heard of others that have gone the opposite way (6 to 4). So if I had to do it all over again, I would recommend doing some (fun) field research: go to a jewelry store and try on multiple styles- different types of 4 prong settings and 6 prong settings- and choose the type you like the best!

This is why I prefer 6 over 4. My first ring was in a 4 prong setting and it looked squarish vs round. Try different settings on your hand and see which you prefer. And yes 6 prongs is more secure than 4.

I agree with what everyone here has posted.

The 4 prong setting that I had for years gave my diamond a squarish shape, at first glance. I loved this illusion at the time, so it was not a con for me. My 6 prong setting definitely showcases the roundness of my diamond beautifully. I chose the 6 prong setting because I am clumsy and needed something to protect my stone. I absolutely love my 6 prong. It is the perfect setting for me right now.

Definitely try on different settings to see what you like. Both 4 prong and 6 prong settings can be made thick, or dainty or anywhere in-between and this definitely, IMHO, affects the total look of your ring.

Good luck. :wavey:

Thank you all for your responses. I plan on doing what nycspring suggested: going to some jewelry stores and try some on. I had a four prong before, but since I was reading threads about six prongs, and how they make the stone look bigger - and more secure, of course- I started having second thoughts about four prongs for my new 1.8 stone. I feel certain that I'll be getting a Memoire purity setting for it, and I'm not certain if they come in four or six so I'll have to ask Pearlman's about that. Unfortunately we don't have a Memoire affiliate in my area so I can't see one, but I just love the look of them from what I'd seen on the Internet.

I had 4 prongs for 30 years and it didn't make my stone look anything but round, but that is because prongs should be small and not obtrusive! I also came here when looking for a 30th anniversary diamond. I did change to 6 prongs and I do like it better on a larger diamond. I do not think it makes the stone look bigger at all! But I do like the extra protection it offers from bumps as well as the way it looks in general.
