Hi members!!

I feel so darn lucky to be working with David Klass on a ring! I was able to snatch Desertrose's metallic turquoise colored Afghan Tourmaline. It's 13x8x7!!

My ring size is just under a 4.

I want the stone set as low as possible, but a bit concerned about the culet irritating my finger if there is no under gallery. My husband wants the gallery to be gone altogether.

David graciously sent me 3 sketches to see the options of how with or without under gallery would look like.

Your thoughts/experience much welcomed!!!IMG_20220526_195328.jpg

Here's a side view of what my hubby likes. Would it really bother my finger?? The culet wouldn't be a pointy tip..it would be a line since the stone is a rectangle

Don’t think it’ll be uncomfortable but I think that much open space will have an affect on how the ring fits. I think you’ll need to adjust your normal sizing but hard to tell how much.
I wonder about the juxtaposition of such rounded details with such a square stone.

I agree about the sizing...

As for the rounded details with an angular stone... that's exactly what I want...I needed something to counter the angular look of a step cut...

It could irritate when your fingers swell.

Can you show us the other sketches where there is an under gallery?

He didn't make one because I requested not to have an undergallery bit now I am having second thoughts on the whole ring design altogether?

Does anyone have other ideas for this stone??? I would REALLY appreciate all your input!!

Niel, do I happen to have some ideas for a bezel step cut setting? I would really appreciate any of your ideas! Thanks

Oh I misunderstood thinking that he had sketches with it and without it. Actually love the design on the sides etc. and I like that you can see the stone but I would personally prefer a little bit of an under gallery even if it’s just a little swoop where you can still clearly see the stone, but you have more of a circular shape around your finger. Like even putting metal where that red line is on the diagram underneath the stone. But of course this is all personal preference.

Maybe a bead or bar underneath could keep it with an open appearance, but tighter to your finger. You could (maybe) throw a 1 pointer on there for a surprise.

I also think it could be a slippery fit with so much open on the top and wonder if the weight of the top would cause the ring to slip to the sides?

Beautiful design though, I like it!

Oh man I have so many ideas.
Dk is making me something as well if we can approve our cads around the same time we can be ladies in waiting together lol.

Let me collect my thoughts and I will get back to you with some photos

My ideas will be something that adds more geometry to the design as my eye just prefers to let the stone dictate that sort of thing. If you are someone who always prefers a more covered style I can show you some for that too but I prefer when the setting is styled around the stone.
I get the impression we’re looking for sleek and thin - minimal but thoughtful .

I like something like this for the shank

I don’t think you need to have a halo in the basket for it to sit low to your finger. So long as the basket is wide enough that the stone can sit basically against your skin- you can have a full basket - basically just don’t angle the sides of the basket under the stone at all.
Visually (in your case) I’m imagining it almost like a shoebox with a hole in the bottom for the shoes to tough the floor (in this metaphor the shoebox is the basket- the shoes are your stone and the floor your finger. )

I think something like this (in all metal to go with your minimalist direction) would be a small but impactful gallery design. (Sans the gap in the bezel)

This design is a yawn but visually you can see what I mean about a basket that is just very stinking wide lol

Ah...I see what you mean, Niel! Thanks for your explanations!

My husband has TOTALLY different thoughts for the stone. He wants something with no detailing, something very organic and plain...

I haven't even received the stone yet, so I will wait for it first!

Just remember you’re the one who is going to be wearing it and not your husband.
