6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS WEEK!

I can't decide if I want a legato head or a 6 prong. I'm worried that the 6 prong they would give me would be poorly done. They said they could only add their standard 6prong. Any thoughts?

(The reason I want a 6prong is purely superstitious, as a 4prong in Chinese folklore is unlucky, while 6 is lucky! I was also hoping that a 6prong would make my .75ct look slightly bigger)

Nevertheless, the legato looks great. Yah, or nah? What would you do?

This is the setting:http://www.whiteflash.com/engagemen...o-micro-pave-diamond-engagement-ring-1012.htm

Here is the 6prong head. http://www.whiteflash.com/engagemen...ffany-style-solitaire-engagement-ring-582.htm

I can say that having owned both 6 prong and Legato setting is that even thought the Legato setting is set low, it made my cushion look bigger. As to 4 prong vs. 6 prong, some say 4 prong makes a round diamond look kind of square.

If I were to ever get a round diamond, I would do a Legato setting. To me it's a little more omph than a regular 6 prong setting. I hope that helps.

Even luckier than 6 is 8! I would get the legato, but ask WF to do double claw prongs on the end (this is a small change, should be easy).
Then, you will have 8 prongs, and a gorgeous setting.

The 6 prongs will overwhelm the diamond IMO.

Hmmmm.....I like this idea! I just talked to WF and they said they could easily split them for me. Do you guys think it would look OK since it would be hand split from their original legato? They said an actual double prong would take 3-4 weeks, so a split would just take a day. I'm just worried that the split wouldn't look right.

Re: 6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS W

If you're not in a hurry, I'd wait and have them cast a full 8 prong, personally. Or, ask if they have ever split the prongs before, and ask to see pics so you can see the result. I've got split prongs on my ring, and if I counted them as one prong, it would be pretty thick.

And I'm a huge fan of both the legato setting and 8 prongs in general. I've got a .75 with 8 prongs. Here's a top down pic to give you an idea of what it will look like:

You are awesome! Thanks for the pics! I need it by the 22nd, so I'm kinda in a rush. That ring looks amazing!

Thanks, I'm rather fond of it.

Have you considered the Sierra setting? It's got the split prongs already built in, and a rather lovely head design in general:

Acutally, the Sierra is what the WF rep sent me as a pic of what my split prongs would look like, but only from the top. It would only be split at the top, rather than the Sierra's split all the way down.

Re: 6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS W

The Sierra is the same price as the Legato Micro-Pave, so I'd rather take the diamond melee for the same price. Plus, the WF rep said the Legato is slightly more delicate than the Sierra head, otherwise I'd just switch out the Legato head for the Sierra. I don't have the option of waiting, because of time(also added custom cost), so a split at the top will have to do.

Re: 6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS W

Any particular reason you're leaning towards the Legato over the Sierra? Can they put the Sierra head into the legato setting, if you're wanting the cathedral shoulders?

ETA: Just saw your above post, which answered both of my questions. Go for the split then! I'd ask that they maybe score the prong the rest of the way down, to give the illusion of a full split, if that makes sense?

Re: 6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS W

Hm. I think it will look good either way. That said, I'd personally choose to have them swap the Sierra head, simply because it's designed to have the 8 prongs already, if that makes sense? It's still a pretty delicate head, IMO.

Re: 6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS W

I love the look of pave on the shank...definitely spices up the traditional solitair look. the split prongs look nice! I like this combo a lot!

hmmmm.....now I'm not sure if I should keep the Legato with hand split prongs or just use the Sierra with machine split prongs. Any jewelers out there to give me an opinion?

Here's a moderately horrible paint mock-up of the Sierra head on the Legato Shank:

Thanks for the comparison pics! I was looking for the side pics. How did you know?! :appl:

hmmmm....I see you point now. Maybe I should just go with the Sierra. One danger of getting the Legato is that WF said it would be considered a semi-custom job, so if I didn't like the quality of the split prongs, then I would be charged a 20% restocking fee ($300+).

that is a pain! I have to say, I have a 4 prong and I dont find it to be an issue. I take my ring off for sleep, shower, chores, swimming, gym, so I really am careful with it. I also get my prongs checked every 2-3 months to see if they need tightening. I feel pretty secure with my prongs.

In regards to the round look versus square= I find that it gives it a more cushiony look , but I love my setting and dont think that the 4 prongs makes it look too square.

The reason I don't want a 4 prong is purely because the Chinese believe that the number 4 is "unlucky" and that the number 8 is lucky!

At this point, I'm going with WF. I've already reserved the diamond and everything. Plus, they offer me the best price...in addition to the pricescope wire, 11% off setting, and $100 repeat customer discount. Their customer service has been really helpful, too.

good deal. well if you go with the setting without any pave/stones on the shank then the wedding band can be sparkly with bling!

Re: 6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS W

Whatever you end up doing will be lovely. The only reason I'd lean towards the Sierra is simply that if you really want 8 prongs - I'd go with something that was designed to have 8 prongs.

But the legato micro-pave setting was meant to go with the legato setting. So the real question is what would look smoother, a new Sierra head on a Legato micropave setting, or a Legato micro pave setting with custom cut prongs?

Re: 6 prong or legato? worried about quality. BUYING THIS W

Well, you were originally going to have a 6 prong head put on, right? So the concept of swapping the head isn't too out there.

Neither of the rings has a fully integrated head, meaning that it's not completely integral to the design of the ring. I think that swapping the Sierra head would look more deliberate than splitting the prongs on the legato head. If the prongs were going to be split all the way down, that would be different. But just split at the top... I dunno, seems odd to me.

Here's mine again. Do you see how the split goes all the way down? Where would WF stop the split?

ETA: Not the best pic, but the best I could find.

"bling in a tree",huh? :D

I've already sent an email to my WF rep stating that I may change my request to a Sierra head. Thanks again for the comparison pics. The photoshop on the micro-pave was really helpful. Either way, I'm thankful I didn't get the 6prong head put on!
