My original ER was a .9 carat RB. I'm thinking about getting a .8 RB and turning them into studs. A .1 difference shouldn't be that noticable in studs, right?

Yes, that will be too noticeable. What you do is match the diameters as closely as possible. So if you can get the diameter measurement, then we could see what range might work. I'd probably want to match the cut somewhat, too. However, the best option might be to use this diamond in a pendant so you could get a matched pair of ideal cut studs!

Yeah, that will be noticable and with the earrings on either side of your face, it will create an unbalanced look. IMO, you want an ideal match and that can be done with a bit of searching.

I like this idea

I wish I could afford to get ideal cut studs but I can't (and I already have a pendant). Maybe I should send my diamond to WF and have them try to match it for me? The problem is I only have a budget of $2,500 and that includes the setting (which is going to be the 8 prong).

Yes, definetly contact them about matching. By phone though so you can explain (I think phone is better :)).

FWIW, before I got my ACAs, I had a smaller set and the diamonds weren't exactly the same and it was obvious. Even my DH who is NOT into jewelry could tell! My ACAs are EXACTLY matched and make my face look more even or something like that.

Well, I'm glad I asked! Thank goodness for PS.

I've been dealing with a very sweet gal at WF. I was thinking of just sending them my diamond and having them match it. I know me and I know I'd be totally bugged if they were noticably off insize (although I'm totally OK with the color being a little different)

Hi athena,

Just a thought: would it be easier to match your pendant stone within your budget, and turn the 0.90 into a pendant?

I would love to have a pendant close to a carat, whereas I would be more than happy to have studs that are 1ctw, if that makes sense. But ultimately, of course, it is up to you :))

I already have 1ctw earrings. So this would be an upgrade to the earrings with the end result be of using my current earrings to convert my ER into a 3-stone (way down the road)

Cool, sounds like you have some great projects in the pipeline :))

Does the .90 stone have a grading certificate? If so, you need to send them all the info on the certificate. I don't think you really need to send the stone itself unless you just want to. But if it is not graded, then it might be necessary. I don't think you can go more than one color grade different, but I'd want the diameters to be almost the same and I also like the tables to be close to the same (as in not a 54% with a 60+%, for example). If this stone is not ideal cut and you get a similar stone for the other earring, you may end up not being able to have a trade-in policy on the new stone. So be sure you want them to be your forever earrings! I do think it might be hard to do with a budget of $2500 including the setting unless the color and clarity of the first stone are pretty low.

My first sone is H SI2 so it is pretty low. I could do J with SBF and that'll work fine too. I do have a GIA cert. I'll get a copy of that and send the info WF's way. Thank you for the idea.
