Hello this is my first post here, I received this diamond as a gift from my mom before she passed but she didn't tell me anything about it. I'm very new to all this so I was wondering if anybody had a clue on the value of this. I was not able to do a Gia certificate because my country doesn't do anything above 4 carats. Therefore I did igi instead because I wasn't even sure if the diamond was real or lab grown. In any case does anybody have any idea what a stone like this is worth?IMG_20240606_172347.jpgIMG20240606164949.jpg

Value will depend on where you live! And don’t mean insurance value, retail replacement, or what you would get if you try to sell it? Those values will be wildly different. But definitely $$$.

What do you plan to do with it?

I don't really have any plans on what to do with it, but I feel strange having something I have no idea of what the value could be.

Oh yeah I would definitely hold onto it too. OP the market is in the process of adjusting to lab diamonds and prices are in crazy flux. Great time to buy natural stones, not so much a great time to sell.

Balls! Hang on to that.
Best option is a really good appraiser such as the ones on this forum.

OP is overseas. Only the NY and Carlsbad GIA locations will cert a natural diamond over 4 cts.

Excellent point, thank you.

Since it's clean I would recut into a top H&A stone. At this size it would be impressive to look at.

I’d look into this too. It’s already below 10ct so there is room for weight loss within radically hurting value. Might be hard to accomplish though bc I sure wouldn’t want to put it in the mail! Insurance would be hard to find!

Oh this is an interesting idea. I wonder if there is any value to a recut due to the YZ color. At this size and color what is more valuable cut or carat weight?

Actually I have a buyer who offered 75k and he actually said for him it's less that 9.5 carat because he would recut, therefore everything makes sense. I live in Bangkok Thailand by the way, just to add more context.

A really good recut might make it face up whiter. I wonder if it was cut for color in the first place? I don't have the expertise to to make a guess.

He doesn't mention color but he said he needs to be cut it to make it triple excellent.

You might take it to a local appraiser and/or some local dealers to get a sense of the market. If there is one buyer there are likely more.

Very interesting the buyer wants to recut. It would certainly add value.

I went to multiple appraisers but they all just said that there's nothing for them to go off of. I went to 6 denied by 2 and 4 just said sorry I don't know.

Like a fancy color stone face up color plays a part in if its desirable in this range. A recut could lower its desirability and value the opposite of what might happen with say a G color.
The market for this stone is someone who wants a large yellowish diamond without paying fancy light yellow pricing.

75k is pretty good, imo, if that’s in USD. Recutting would also incur a cost and while would almost certainly add value, I don’t know how difficult it would be for you to sell it afterwards.

I wonder if it’s possible to recut it so it gets fancy light yellow instead, which would up the value?

Not without loosing a huge amount of weight.
The cutter that cut it did that consideration.
Someone got fired for missing 10ct.

Whoa.

If your goal is to sell then $75k is a very decent price from a dealer. At auction, you *might* get $75k but then you would have to pay the auction house a commission.

I do wonder what GIA would grade the stone as.

@Karl_K *IF* GIA graded this a light fancy yellow, would it be worth a lot more?

yes a lot but its highly unlikely.
If they lived in the US I would consider recommending a outside chance and have GIA grade it.
Either drop it off or have Neil or Dave A. send it in.
It would not be cheap however.
From outside the US the expense is to large for a teeny tiny possibility of a GIA fly.

Haha that’s horrible! I’m laughing because it is kind of a funny position to be in, to have such a massive diamond no one knows what to do with it!

Yeah I was thinking of the recut if they were keeping it! I know I’d rather have the optimal light play than a teensy bit more tint. But if selling, no reason to take that risk IMO.

Is there a Sotheby’s or Christie’s or some other high end dealer relatively nearby? Like Singapore? Or Hong Kong? They might be able to help.
