Have you ever had sticker shock, the GOOD kind?

I dropped off a sweater at one of the few dry cleaners left in my city a couple weeks ago. I haven’t had things dry-cleaned for years now since I left a career that required a partly dry-clean-only wardrobe. Maybe the occasional dress here and there but nothing really since career change and covid.

I walked in with my claim ticket fully expecting to pay $12-15. Nope. SIX BUCKS. $6!!! I looked at the guy and said “are you sure?!”

Lest anyone think I had the most perfect day ever, I then went to my jeweler to pick up a ring that needed prongs tightened…to the tune of $97.

Anyway, I feel like we’re all so used to ever-increasing prices on every day things that I was curious if anyone else has had “wow, that’s a great price” moments lately.

I did, just the other day. I meant to get hotel reservations directly from a hotel and instead somehow accidentally ended up going through one of those middleman sites that I hate. And they added about $200 on to a $400 stay for no apparent reason.

I tried to call them twice but couldn't get through so I reported it to my credit card company. They ruled in favor of the middleman company so I called my credit card company to scold them. The customer service rep. said, oh, okay, I'll remove the charge then.

Next thing I know, the entire $600 was refunded, the overcharge and the room charge, which I didn't even ask for. I thought about trying to correct the excess refund and then I thought, nah, they deserve to take the loss, for being scammy in the first place.

Which reminds me, I really need to spend that refund now.

I think your situation turned out exactly as it should have. ;)

I stopped at McDonalds and bought a Mocha Frappe. I have no idea why I did this as I usually get Starbucks Frappuccino’s. I liked the McDonalds version much better and it was even less expensive than I expected. Oh the little things that make me happy.

Just today I was passing by a gas station and was surprised to see prices are 80 cents less per gallon than even a few months ago. Not sure why but it was a welcome sight, surprising actually. (Southern West Coast)

Just about every time I fill up my car, I marvel that I’m paying so much less per gallon that I used to pay in the UK.

If this ever becomes a thing in Connecticut maybe I’ll have something to contribute

Until then……

@Daisys and Diamonds, Do you think they might only offer them during the summer? I had another one today. I can see them easily becoming addicting. I tell myself they aren't that bad if I ask to please leave off the whip cream. I’ll probably have another one tomorrow for Gary. LOL

I had one single slice of pizza left over and put it in the fridge to take to work. Then I forgot to take it to work and when I realized I had forgotten the slice at home, I figured it would just get thrown out, because multiple-day-leftover pizza is not that appetizing. But I never threw it out and then today I felt like a snack and that one slice of pizza was perfect.

HI:

Yes. I frequent an Italian market that has the "best" restaurant. Only fresh ingredients used for outstanding dishes. Prepped by chefs. Best sticker shock I've experienced: veal chop, fresh veggies and potatoes 16$, or porchetta or lamb roast or 1/2 roasted chicken same price. Veal schnitzel 12$. Shrimp salad roll $12 with side and the shrimp were BIG & whole, not broken or shredded pieces. Portions feed me for 2 days! I can't make this stuff for the (excellent) price they charge. LOVE the place!!!

cheers--Sharon

Jerry English in Muskego, WI, master goldsmith. I brought him a 1 ct. princess and a 4-prong setting with incredibly small prongs. Stupid choice on my part but somehow he managed to set it beautifully, as he does everything. Asked for the bill and he said $30. WHAT?? MrCarParts fished a $100 out of his wallet. $30 is not going to fly (I would have paid him $400.)
Jerry has worked out of the basement of Mrs. Olson, a 90 year-old antiques dealer for 30 some years and their relationship is hysterical, part owner/respectful tenant and part 5th grade hijinks. And he looks after her, probably better than her own children.
It wasn't the bargain that makes my ring valuable to me, it's Jerry and Mrs. Olson.

Now you remind me....

I inherited a weighty but delicately carved malachite Foo Dog. At least 40 years old and survived up until a move. It didn't matter it wasn't in it's glory days..I was happy to have it.

I took it to a lapidary in town. A place well known to me. The owner was out but I left my treasured piece and my story.

I got a call a few days later from him. He does all the cutting/polishing and has for decades. He told me what I already knew, it couldn't be remorphed into it's original form. It's soft after all . But he said he could do what he could piece it together. I was grateful. His estimate. $15. I could hardly swallow--I would have paid 10 or 15X that...or whatever he estimated. I told him that and he said "no need".

Wow.

I can't think of anything, unfortunately.

Gas! In my area we have a big "club" membership where it was recently ONLY 2.84 a gallon for regular. Super exciting.

While I of course don’t buy the same things every week, it seems that my weekly grocery bills have gone down. I would have to do a real analysis to see exactly why, but I do feel like some prices for groceries are dropping.

Can't say the same...wish I could.

Omg. Yes. A few sit-down Restaurants that I frequented pre pandemic and considered pricey back then, have not raised their prices and now seem like decent deals!
