This was possibly the hardest thing I have ever photographed. It is near impossible to take a static picture without showing tilt extinction which you don''t really see in real life.

Anyway, this was the best of a very large bunch of pics:

Neat!

Can you post pics of the setting from the side and back?

I'm trying to do a pendant but am having difficulty seeing the depth of the setting.

What size (ie: mm dimensions) is the stone?

LS

ETA: oops, Sorry Pandora. I didn't realize you were still uploading pics! I'll sit quietly and patiently!

Totally sympathise as I can''t photograph my Sphenes either!!! You just don''t see the fire do you? I''ve found that they video well and also you see the fire if the photograph is slightly out of focus!!!!

Wonderful pendant and enjoy wearing it. I bet you get tons of compliments.

I took these a while ago and DH has disappeared to a 5 day conference with the camera so can''t take any others at the moment. Sorry.

The stone is just under 4cts and is 10.41 x 8.38 x 5.94

The setting is 18kt yg and from the Stuller catalogue.

It''s so sad that the photos don''t begin to do justice to the dispersion on this rock.

I get stopped whenever I wear it by people wanting to know what it is.

Here''s a blurry one that shows the rainbows a bit.

One more:

Richard Homer found the stone at Tucson for me this year and then recut it to maximise performance. I lost over 30pts in the recut - but I think it was worth it!

Almost impossible - you wouldn''t believe the contortions I was doing to get these ones.

What a cool stone! I''d love to see it IRL! I''ll be one of those people asking you what it is!

Thanks for that. It will help.

The pics are really kool.

It''s beautiful, Pandora. Despite the difficulty of capturing sphene on camera, you''ve done a pretty good job! I can only imagine how amazing it is in person.

It''s so beautiful and those flashes are amazing!

Its lovely Pandora. I am just getting into coloured stones so I have never heard of a sphene before. I love it though!

Great stone for a pendant. Love the little flashes of red and green :)

Very nice, I am sure it looks better in person, but you can see how much life there is in the ptotos

Thank you all.

The best way to describe it in real life is to look at the bottom section of photo 3 and imagine the whole stone like that - just one big mass of rainbows.

Maisie, they're one of my favourites - sadly not very wearable as they are VERY soft and fragile. The week I knew it was being set I felt sick thinking about it.

OH MY GOODNESS ! !

THAT IS ONE OF THE LOVELIEST THINGS I''VE EVER SEEN. REALLY.

I BET YOU COULD PLAY WITH IT FOR HOURS.

WOO-HOO. (I wrote in all caps for emphasis, even though I don''t like caps.)

---

love those sphenes

Pandora - It''s lovely! I would love to see a neck shot. I bet it is even more amazing in person. No wonder you are receiving so many compliments.

Nice sphene Pandora! Perfect in a pendant!

OHHHH, Pandora! I like this!!!!!

I know it''s impossible to shoot, but do you have any neck shots of it?

Sphene is so cool! Picking up one for a pendant.. definitely on my (ever-growing) list too. I can only imagine how eye-catching it must be in person.

Pandora - I love it! So lovely, even if it was hard to get the photos!

Very nice.

Beautiful pendant Pandora.

Ladies, who do we trust to set sphenes well?

Pandora, I love it. That and your Mali Garnet

Good question, Pandora, who do we trust to set a Sphene????

I''m sitting on a beautiful sphene just because I don''t trust anyone to set it.

At the moment, I''m thinking of sending an apatite to be set. If it survives the setting process, the setter must be good! 3 planes of perfect cleveage - agh!

Wink Jones did the setting for this.

Pandora,

I believe you live in the UK. Did you choose Wink Jones to set your sphene because there was no-one you considered competant enough on your side of the pond?

A little off topic, but when we moved to Canada from the UK and started going to a Canadian dentist, he was apalled at the quality of workmanship of our UK dentist, commonplace apparently. Is it the same with people who make jewellery? Graff & Asprey aside of course.

The UK jeweller I worked for in the last century had a fully operational bench and clock & watch maker. He churned out some very nice, very, very expensive pieces. Granted I never saw a sphene!

I love sphene, it''s such an underrated gemstone, but so lively. It was also wise that you had it set in a pendant so it doesn''t scratch easily.

Beautiful stone and pendant, enjoy it for many years to come!
