Both are very popular styles, esp. on CS, and beautiful in their own right.

If you have both, do you like one over the other? Is there one you prefer, in terms of aesthetics, sparkle, comfort, you name it..

Regardless of you have one or the other, or none at all, please chime in and share your thoughts!

My choice would be very stone dependant. I like halos but not all the time. Lotus rings are very pretty but I can''t imagine having them for every stone I own. Sometimes I want simple lines, sometimes I want something more romantic. Or antique looking. I just have different tastes.

Personally, I like admiring halos on others, but don''t really wear them since on most days I''m wearing jeans and a tshirt, or in scrubs. Haha, so I wouldn''t often wear such blingy jewelery. I much prefer the understated delicacy of the lotus settings for everyday wear :)

Arcadian- I can certainly relate. My taste in jewelery is multi-facted (hehe, a little gemstone pun) and I will fall for anything from a five stone, to a halo, to a lotus, to an engraved setting, to a fishtail. I have to say that I love your new ring with the sphene!

MTG- I don''t own a halo (yet) but I was wondering the same thing that you just mentioned- whether I would wear it on a daily basis. On top of being blingy, they''re also probably harder to clean. I wonder if there is a way to make a union between the two?

I perfer halos as my favorite but I have several rings and other pieces that are not halo but fishtail, lotus, 5 stone etc. I just think it depends on what the stone is. Sometimes I buy a stone for a specific setting or vice versa. I like changing up my jewerly as Arcadian mentioned though I typically do it based around my mood. When I''m in a very good mood I love to wear my bright colored stones that are a little more flashy. When I''m more low key I wear my darker ones.

Hi szh07,

Great thread. I don''t own a halo ring yet, because I fear it would be too blingy for everyday use (in the play field with the kids, LOL). But my recent rope halo aqua from Sally has been a great synthesis of the romantic style and a halo style, did you see that thread (with the bracelet)? Not blingy and insanely comfy. I like it a lot! (except now I will have to try a diamond halo as well, because I really really like the style, but first I have to find the stone for it

It depends on a number of things, mostly an overall look and feel of the stone. If it''s something like a rose quartz, with a pastel color and gentle brilliance, Lotus would probably be a better idea. If it''s something like a pink spinel, with a bright color and a lot of scintillation, I''d probably suggest a halo. It''s also about the choice of metal, shape of the stone, cutting style, use of the piece etc., but I think that "shy stones" look better in understated settings, while "louder ones" ask for more attention and are great for blingy styles.

Funny thing is, what makes a ring more wearable to me is not the amount of diamonds, but how low the setting is. For me, the lotus is a very pretty setting, but it''s just too high for my shove-my-hands-in-my-pockets tendancies. And I like wearing a blingy ring with casual outfits - okay, maybe not with gym clothes, but jeans and t-shirts? Heck yeah! Maybe I''m just weird though...

I think I''d make the choice based on the stone.

There are BEAUTIFUL examples of both rings on PS.

I don''t think I''d wear a halo every day unless I was SURE the melee would stay put. Too much potential to get knocked around a bit in my day to day life. But if the stone demanded a halo I would halo it.

Halo rings are really not my taste. There are some beautiful ones on PS, but they''re just not me! I don''t have any halos, though I do have a cluster ring or two. I love the lotus and am getting a second one...so I have a very clear preference.

Bezels, on the other hand...

I don''t have either, so my opinion doesn''t hold much water, but I prefer the lotus and hope to have one at some point. But, I like more simple jewelry.

I love both. Halos are my favourite but I would rather put a large, sparkly stone in a lotus setting as a halo might be a bit over the top.

Wow, I really love hearing everyone''s opinions! I''ve been conflicted for quite some time. I''ve been talking to Sally, and I think I might try very hard to incorporate the two into one!

Imagine a diamond halo, with an overlapped lotus petal basket and a simple band of the lotus ring. Its very exciting to design a ring, but scary because ''picture'' I have of the concept is in my head!

Mariedtiger- I did see the thread! It is a beautiful ring, very romantic. I love the sleepy aqua.

Ma Re- Interesting line of thought. You know, now that you mention it, I''ve actually never even seen rose quartz paired with diamonds...it makes sense to put a loud stone with sparkly diamonds, and a quiet stone in a simpler setting.

Cellentani- Yup yup! A lot of solitaires can be set high, especially if it is a larger gem...making it much easier to get knocked around and less comfortable too.

Stone Hunter- Melee staying put, and staying clean, are both major concerns of mine! I find it to be so sad when I lose a stone.

Jstar- Your lotus is beautiful! I love bezels too.

Packrat and Kribbie- I love the lotus too. Its simple, yet detailed and elegant.

Wolftress actually had a lotus halo made by sally :) There are a few pics in the SMTR forum under the "Show me your lotus rings" thread.

It really depends on the stone. I usually buy my stones first and than decide what setting is best for it. I have a small emerald shape tsavorite and a small oval spinel that I would like to put a halo around to make bigger. If I Had a medium sized cab, or 6-7 mm round stone, I would probably go for a lotus.

MTG- I''ve seen it! The concept is the same, but I think I''ve got a couple of details that will make the finished look fairly different. I had been considering halo''ing a small stone that I have, but, alas most standard mounts are too large for it. Then I thought about a baby lotus, and then I saw the gallery of a Leon which reminded me of a lotus, and I started putting all of the pieces together. I haven''t gotten to see a full on shot of Wolftress'' ring yet, only pictures of the gallery and shank.

Ltl- I love Sally''s cab lotus rings. Small stones can look amazing in the baby lotus, but I like the way even small stones can make a big statement in a halo.

I''d also take size of the stone into consideration - a halo can make a tiny stone seem even smaller, especially if it''s dark in tone.

Ma Re, I had actually never thought of that before. Are you referring to darker colors, or darker tones?

This thread has really made me consider so many different aspects of choosing a ring!

I like them both, and it really depends on the stone, and quite a bit on the size. I''m a bezel freak, though, so my initial inclination with almost every gemstone I own is to stick it in a bezel setting.

Haha, me too!! Unfortunately, I really love dark, sultry colors sometimes, which don''t lend themselves to bezeling. In which case, I go get myself a lotus

Well, darker colors are those of dark tones - tone is a level of darkness or lightness of color

I mentioned tone of colors, cause human eye always perceives dark colored object as smaller than a lightly colored one of the same size/shape. So if you halo such a stone and it''s already small, it might look...really small.

I have both and I like both, but they''re such different styles. I wear the halos much more frequently, but I think that''s partly because the stones I have in the halo rings I like more than than the tourmaline I have in the lotus. But if I had to choose...I''d probably choose a halo

I don''t own a lotus yet - I am waiting for the right stone to come along. I agree with Stone Hunter, Ma Re, and others that it depends on the stone, and with Cellentani on the setting height. I wear my emerald 3 stone halo sometimes more frequently than my solitaire because it''s comfortable and gorgeous and sadly, my fingers are starting to pudge up.

I have a pink tourm round that I was going to set in a non-halo until I saw how good it looks with the contrast, so even though I''m more of a bezel gal, it will be going into a delicate pronged halo.

Cellentani - don''t worry you''re not the only one who like to wear a t shirt and jeans with bling :) I think of it as an effortless way to dress up.

Litebrite, is there a thread about this emerald three stone halo ring?

Here''s the photo

Scroll down in the thread - it''s on the top of a glue container. I don''t use the best photo props. There are visible inclusions but I love the color.

Wow, it is beautiful! I think it really deserves its own thread...
