Several weeks ago I got a phone call from the husband of my best friend in the UK to tell me that my wonderful friend has breast cancer. As you can imagine, I was devastated. I felt so far away, still do.
Nobody deserves this insidious disease, but my friend Nicky deserves it least of all. She has never ceased to amaze me in the 19 years I have known her at her ability to take life's cruel knocks and bat them straight back to the other side of the net. She doesn't think she's strong, but she is and I know that she will come through this.
Her husband told me not to send flowers as they were knee deep in them. I offered to send a puppy but Nicky said she would prefer a Chippendale. They were all kind of tied up right now, so I needed to come up with something else. Nicky has always been one of those wonderful people who sends the most fantastic presents. I am not, and despite my best attempts to spoil her when I see her, I am just not in her league.
It needed to be something good.
From the minute I saw Lori's JKT key with the tiny heart pendant on it, I have loved it. So I decided to see if I could find a tiny pink sapphire heart for Julia to make a "Key to your heart" pendant with. Let me tell you, it's not easy to find a decent 4mm pink heart at short notice. I was failing miserably. Fortunately for me, I know a fantastic lady called Lesley Gavin who came to my rescue. Within 48 hours of my telling her what I wanted to do, she had found the most perfect un-heated pink sapphire and shipped it to Julia. I owe a huge debt of thanks to Lesley for this, because the project would not have been the same without it.
Now fortunately, I was already in Julia's queue, having sent off my stones for ring projects and a deposit a month or two earlier. Well Julia was just wonderful. I know she must have been busy but she burned the midnight oil to come up with a design for the key pendant. I also owe her a huge debt of thanks for this because the key turned out just perfectly and she shipped it off to the UK today.
The key to my girlfriend's heart is her husband Paul and her beautiful four year old daughter Jessica. Julia found a way to incorporate their initials along with Nicky's and the result is nothing short of sublime. I also kind of like that Jessica and I share the same first initial.
I wrote to Nicky and told her that as instructed I wasn't sending flowers, but instead she could expect to receive a bucket of Arizona's finest sand. She wrote back to me and asked if the bucket of sand was for her to bury her head in. I promptly responded that it wasn't and told her about a saying my Mum used to say when she thought with a bit of effort you can achieve anything.
She used to say, "Give me a bucket of sand, and I'll sing you a desert song". It was my way of saying to Nick that she was going to get through it.
Anyway, without further ado, here is the pendant.
Julia and Lesley, I owe you both so much for this - thank you.
