A treat for me - what size should I get?

I am thinking about treating myself to a pair of diamond huggie hoops. I am turning 40 in less than 2 months and my co-author and I just submitted our finished (or what we hope is our finished) book manuscript draft to our publisher. So, I would like a little reward.

Just 5 stones in each ear; not the inside-out type of hoops. 14kt WG. My main concern is size. I am torn between 1.5 ctw and 2 ctw. So, the difference between .15 and .20 stones. Is the size difference going to be really perceptible for earrings - for a ring, I'd maybe go bigger, but with huggie hoops, will the size difference really show up?

I have a double piercing in each ear and wear a tiny diamond stud in the top piercing at all times. Smallish earlobes but pretty average.

What would you all choose and why?

I can't give you feedback on the earrings because I have no idea.

But still wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS on submitting your book to the publisher. Awesome accomplishment.

Is this your first book?

Congratulations! What a fun way to celebrate.

I have been looking at the dimensions of diamonds and then using a micrometer to get a feel for the size. You may not have specific dimensions for the stones in the earrings, but look up stone of that ctw and use them to get an idea of how much the difference will be and if it matters to you.

Is there anywhere you can see both in person and try them on?

I would say that for everyday and casual wear, the 1.5 is fine. If you enjoy more bling or want them more for special occasions, then go for the 2 carat ones. I had the 1.5s before and I thought they were a good size. I eventually sold them (a PS friend now has them and wears them a lot) because I generally wear my studs when I want to wear diamond earrings.

@CJ2008, thank you! Actually it's kind of my second book. The first one was a volume I co-edited, and this one is a manuscript that a different colleague and I co-wrote. So, I guess it depends on how you count it. It's in the academic arena so it's not as though royalties will buy me the earrings in question though. :mrgreen2:

I am not a diamond studs person, for whatever reason. I do wear my 8 and 10mm pearl studs, but diamond studs and I just aren't a thing. I am not even sure why.

I will see if I can try on both options. I just don't want to get the 1.5 ctw, which is definitely the more cost-responsible option and be thinking "I need to upgrade in the future" I need for these to be my forever huggie hoops. I have a feeling 1.5ctw will be perfect, but we'll see. I'll keep you posted.

If anyone has ear pics for 1.5 and 2 ctw, respectively, please post them here.

Diamondseeker did a thread comparing the sizes. I have 2 carat total weight and love them. They're blingy however, I like my jewelry on the more blingy side of things!

Maybe this informative thread by @diamondseeker2006 will be helpful for you @Tanzigrrl

I think the best advice is to try the different sizes on your ears and see what looks best and feels best on you. Good luck and cannot wait to see your new huggies. I love huggies they are versatile and pack a nice punch IMO.

Congratulations! What kind of book did you write?

I have two pairs of the Costco hoops. A tiny small pair and the 1.45 hoops. Costco now offers a pair with an omega back. I would get those. Then you don't have to worry about it coming undone, although I have never had a earring come open. They are very sparkly. Truthfully though, I wear the tiny ones more. They are channel set and a very small carat weight. I think the weight is similar to what BGD offers but they were a lot less. But for this milestone, the 1.45 are perfect. I know Costco diamonds are not ACA quality but I have always been happy with the sparkle of any of their diamond pieces. It is always my go-to because it's easy and their return policy cannot be beat. If you ever had a problem with a piece you can return it at any time.

I have the 1.5ct WF huggies which I think are the perfect size.

I would choose the 1.5ct. I wear a lot of charms on my huggies, and while I want the actual earring to be blingy, I don't want it to steal the show from the pearl or other dangle I have on there.

I don't have big diamond huggies, as in with big diamonds, I have a pair of tiny 6-diamond ones by Jude Frances. I use them as a base for almost all my dangles. I like that they add some sparkle, but the real stuff for me is what is hanging off them.

What?!?! I don't recall the smaller pair! Share some ear pics and a link if they still have them on the website!

I can’t remember how much they were but less than 400.

I just ... girl just pulled out her huggies' birth certificate!:lol-2:

@PintoBean, your so right, . Easier than getting the dreaded ear shot! Not to mention, I take the worst photos on the planet. I am super organized with the filing!

All really good advice. I'm actually surprised that PSers aren't encouraging the "bigger" 2 ctw option. I just don't want to get them and think ... "I should have gone bigger." Incidentally, they are putting in a CostCo near me - that'll be dangerous with the jewelry counter, lol.

I think that trying on would be the best idea. While I'd likely never buy diamonds from a brick and mortar, I would definitely try on sizes there.

As for the book, I'm an academic librarian so the book is about as esoteric as one can get. Not going to be a bestseller, but it's worth celebrating the completion with bling. And, I'm 40 soon and need good earrings, right?!
