Hello,

I am looking for a round natural diamond for an engagement ring. I found this one:

and I am looking for opinions. I used the hca tool and got 1.8. Is that good enough? Do you see any red flags with this diamond? I don't have much knowledge about diamond cut. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thank you

HCA is a rejection tool, any score of less than 2 is a pass and above 2 is fail.

In terms of red flags, a steeper crown angle of 36 + large table of 58 with a star facet of 50 may not work (crown might be too steep). GIA numbers are rounded, this needs to considered too in case rounding pushes it more in the unfavorable direction.

If the diamond is listed online and you are considering it seriously, put it on hold with the vendor (in case someone buys it) and post the listing with video/photo so we can look at it properly.

Wait for the image/video and keep looking in the meantime I suggest.

Don't buy any diamonds online without a photo/video of the actual diamond because the report alone won't tell the full story. You need to see the visuals to fully assess. For instance, you can't gauge symmetry from a GIA cert.

Here are PS recommended proportions for modern round brilliant stones:

The green "All Around" column is the safest proportions, nice stones in the "Firey Balanced" orange and "Bright Balanced" yellow can be found too.

Great thank you. I will defenitely wait for the visuals before purchasing. The other stone I was considering is this one: https://www.bluenile.com/uk/diamond-details/LD16992777. This one has 1.4 hca score and there is video. I put this one on hold as well.

There is some asymmetry but the video doesn't look bad. The stone has a large table of 58, steeper crown of 35.5 but star is 55. With GIA rounding, it hard to call without advanced images like ASET or idealscope images. There are probably better/safer options available.

What is your budget, preferred size, color and clarity requirements?
Are you open to using other vendors or do you prefer to use Blue Nile?

My budget is around 9k pounds for the diamond. I mainly prefer blue nile because it includes all costs for UK. I prefer F or G color, vs2+ clarity, and size around 1.1carats. And of course the best possible cut.

I've had a look at BN but didn't see any particularly good ones that fit your criteria and budget. This one looked ok but too expensive because of premium for IF clarity:

I believe these options better fit your criteria but are with other vendors.
To estimate the taxes, you can use the tax & duty calculator on James Allen's website (bottom of their page under 'Why James Allen? section.

White Flash - a PS member favorite super ideal vendor
(well cut stones & super generous upgrade policy)

Brian Gavin Diamond - super ideal vendor
(currently has a Halloween sale on stones and settings when setting is over $1000, might be within budget after discount. Discount applied automatically in cart)

What is your opinion about these diamonds?

and

I think both have a better cut, but they may not be eye clean? Given the inclusion at the center of the table.

I agree they look to be better cut than the original two BN stones you posted. However, it is hard to know if the are eye clean. The photo/videos are at high magnification and so inclusions are likely to look much worse than they appear in real life to the naked eye. That being said, the inclusions on these are dark in color and on the table, so it is hard to tell for sure if the stones will appear eye clean IRL. See if you can get more information on how eye-clean asking BN if you are keen on these.

Although these BN options look better, they seem to be a similar price if not slightly more than the WhiteFlash options, I would suggest to choose the super ideal stones with WF if you willing to consider other vendors. You are getting a precision cut H&A stone that is the best of the best in terms of cut quality. There are ASET/Idealscope images proving their light performance and you can also ask WF for more details or even side-by-side comparison videos of these in-house vetted stones to help you choose. On top of these things, the generous upgrade policy in case you want to upgrade size, color etc. down the track.

I would personally choose options from super ideal vendors and buy with confidence and peace of mind, whenever the price is similar to other vendors. If there is another compelling offer for a nice stone that is significantly lower priced, then that is a different story.
