Advice on 1.0ctw Rubies for Earrings (time sensitive)

I have some time-sensitive advice that I would like to solicit from this community. I was very thankful for the education given to me about 8 years ago when I looking to purchase my now-wife’s engagement ring. I was able to get a great diamond from Whiteflash that she still loves to look at every day.

I am now in the market for a smaller item with a more modest budget ($1,000 - $1,500): a pair ~0.5ct round rubies for use as earrings (I’m open to bigger if the price isn’t too much bigger). I also need it in hand by the end of February. She is foreign, and is scheduled to take her US citizenship oath on March 2nd and I wanted her to have red, white, and blue gems to wear during the ceremony. The white would be her engagement ring (it’s in the lower end of the near-colorless category so I think that’s good enough anyway) and the blue would be a sapphire necklace I got at a good price from at a show years ago.

I haven’t done a lot of in-person browsing, but whenever I’ve seen a natural ruby in person (typically at Kay, Zales, etc.) they appear very light/pink and very opaque. I had thought to get a lab-created just to have the red gem category covered, but this is a special event so I want get something nicer, and natural. (Heated is fine, as I understand that process is very common, but no filling or anything else beyond “standard” heating.) I’m after a darker red that is as translucent as possible. (I guess the term is “pigeon blood”, which I understand is essentially just marketing but that describes what I’m after.)

I’ve spent about 10 hours browsing various sites linked in other threads here, but haven’t found that many options. There are three pairs of round rubies at gemsny.com that to my uneducated eyes are good options (and that jeweler can put them in studs and get them to me in time):

https://www.gemsny.com/ruby/1.09-Carat-Round-ruby-RP21977RD/?sku=72135&type= (I’ll refer to this as “A” or 77RD)
- This one is the cheapest of the options, by far. I’d like to save the money, honestly, but it's noticeably smaller and lighter than C.

https://www.gemsny.com/ruby/1.04-Carat-Round-ruby-R21926RD/?sku=67796&type= (“B” or 26RD”)
- This is probably not the best option, as it’s $500 more than A and about the same color. The only good thing is that it’s supposed to have less inclusions.

https://www.gemsny.com/ruby/1.00-Carat-Round-ruby-R21846RD/?sku=71849&type= (“C” or 46RD”)
- These stones are darker (which I like more) than A and B, and are a very similar price to B. The employee there said because the stones are darker, the inclusions aren’t noticeable.

Also, should I be worried about “slight inclusions” in rubies of this size? I’m getting them set in studs for now to save money, but eventually I want to get them re-set into dangling mounts with diamonds framing them, like in this picture:

I’m also worried about smaller stones like these being too dark and not reflecting light. (I read that on one a thread here.) Is that a real concern for these options?

I haven’t found really anything else that seems to fit the bill, but I’d like to get advice from this community as to whether these are good options, and to see if anyone has a better suggestion. I need to pull the trigger on this purchase very soon, unfortunately because of my deadline of March 2nd. Any other recommendations or advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Update, I have some pictures now, they should be titled referencing the abbreviations above:

A (top) vs. B (bottom):A-77RD (top) & B-26RD (bottom) 1.jpeg

A (top) vs B (bottom): A-77RD (top) & B-26RD (bottom) 2.jpeg

C (top) vs A (bottom) C-46RD (top) & A-77RD (bottom) 1.jpeg

C (top) vs. A (bottom): C-46RD (top) & A-77RD (bottom) 2.jpeg

C (top) vs B (bottom) C-77RD (top) & B-26RD (bottom) 1 .jpeg

C (top) vs B (bottom): C-77RD (top) & B-26RD (bottom) 2.jpeg

All of them are very dark. The only exception is B, but only because it is very shallow (and thus windowed).

Agreed--I am not keen on any of them

Is the concern with the darkness that light won’t move through the stone well at that size? That site has dozens of other pairs that appear a lot lighter, and at lower prices because of not being “pigeon blood.” I mainly just don’t want them to look pink like the cheap natural rubies at the mall so I thought going darker would be better.

If any of you can point me to a better option, either there or elsewhere, I’d greatly appreciate it since I can’t find anything local that will be ready in time.

Not earrings, but this ring is lovely and within budget.

Thank you for the suggestion. I like the ring, but my wife has said previously that she doesn't want to wear any other rings (other than her wedding band) because it'll take the focus off her engagement ring. That's why I'm "stuck" with earrings for this purchase.

I did find another pair that seem lighter and are actually unheated: https://www.gemsny.com/ruby/0.98-Carat-Round-ruby-RU17805BRD/?sku=73509&type=

My biggest issue is I don't feel like I can judge cut or spot troublesome inclusions.

Not sure if you’d consider vintage but this looks like a pretty nice ready-made set of studs, if time is of the essence. The rubies look real to me, but of course, please verify if interested!

Any chance spinel would work for more options?

There’s prob some IG vendors that might have more options, though the time crunch could limit international options

I think I'm set on it being a round ruby. Otherwise, I probably would have just gone with garnets. I appreciate your and peachchick's recommendations though.

Any chance you're willing to do cabochons?

Unfortunately, I think we both prefer round earrings and it does need to be a ruby.

Given all the requirements, it's possible your best bet to have the studs in time for the ceremony is to go with what you have shortlisted. Instead of asking us which set of rubies we like, how about showing them to your wife and asking her to choose? I think she would be delighted to be involved with the process and her choice will result in the greatest enjoyment for her.

In terms of mitigating the windows in the stones, I would suggest closed backs that will reflect light so that the gems don't look like they have black centers.

@peacechick I ended up doing that essentially last night. I confirmed she wanted darker red rounds, and preferred untreated vs better color and clarity. I didn't show her the specific stones I was looking at because I don't think either of us can really tell which stones are best cut, etc. based on our limited knowledge level and I really want to surprise her with this gift.

I picked out a pair this morning and they should be mounted and delivered in plenty of time. Thank you everyone for all the advice.

Congratulations to your wife- you are very sweet for picking out such a sentimental gift for her!

Sometimes we just have to take a leap of faith. Glad you were able to find something she'll love. Please come back and share pics when the earrings are finished!
