Advice on Halo size - Ladies what would you do?

Hi all, I have a question for you. My husband recently surprized me with a 5yr wedding anniversary diamond. Upgrade from my 1.43 Pear VS1 to a 3.01 Oval VS1. He would like to put a halo aorund it. But we are unsure the size. He wants big diamonds around 0.05 crisscross halo........what do you ladies think?

He is firm on the halo, split shank mark patterson design. He also wants this ring to be as he puts it "Blinding to other men who hit on me".

Please give me your input!

Your new stone sounds gorgeous, ahem . . . pics, please!

What would I do? I would first decide what *I* want.

Do you want the halo? The split shank? It sounds like your husband has a clear vision of what *he* wants for your ring, but I''m not sure if you''re asking whether we think his vision of the ring will look good, or if you''d like other ideas. ???? Sounds like a fun project, either way!
 
Do you have a picture of the design that he''s got in mind?

Guys it is similar to Katie Holmes ring...I think. Who has the pink remaster?

What is you ring finger size? I think it is so cool hubby want to put his calling card on your finger. Sweet. I bet you are a BABE!!

3 ct. Oval sounds lovely! I''m not sure if I would put a halo around it or not. This is where you get into personal opinions which do not reflect **your** opinion. I would halo a coloured gemstone in a minute, but for my e-ring, I would leave it alone but pave the shank & crown. But again, thats **my** opinion. AND, you must be redoing the wedding band, which again, I would match up with the e-ring pave style. I think 3-5 pointers would give it plenty of bling. If you do the halo, I think .5 is probably a good size, maybe a touch smaller.

Doesnt sound like you''re convinced about the Halo because it is in fact your husband that wants it. Perhaps you both can come up with a compromise about the style.

I have a 1.06 set in a halo (1mm?) which you can see in my avatar. My ring is huge at this size. I can''t imagine what it would looks like 3x as large. I vote for no halo.
 
Hi Ladies,

Thank you all for the advice! Im not quite sure what I want. I think I was really just happy with my pear shape which is also kept company by 3 x .32ct RB on the left hand side of the pear in a tension setting. So, altogether I was wearing a 2.39 tcw ering!

Now that he has put all this time, thought and money into this new ering, I am just going with the flow. But he''s viewed this site and has asked if I could ask what size diamonds to put around the Oval. I believe he has settled on 0.04 or 0.05 now. I will upload some pics ASAP for you! Thanks again!

I agree, don''t do the halo. I think it might be a bit too much for a diamond that size, unless you''re comfortable with having a huge ER. I can''t wait to see pics. Either way, it''s going to be awesome.

Sounds beautiful to me. Rings are so personal. It''s really about what you like. I''d love to see some pics of this stone!
 
Can''t really tell without pics but my initial reaction would be that a 3ct oval can stand on it''s own. You might be taking away from the beauty of a nice big stone like that by halo-ing it.
 
OOooo my Husband just emailed me and said he enjoyed the size of the diamond halo msflutter has and also the halo around catmom? I''m not sure if these are people on here still, but he''s asked what size their halos are? Any help?

Ditto...I definitely wouldn't put a halo on a 3 ct. oval. I'm afraid it would end up looking like a cocktail ring and not good for dailly wear.

One more thought, for a classy larger oval, see Kaleigh's 2+ ct. stone in a setting by Leon Mege.

WOW, what a wonderful hubby you have and a wonderful delemma to be in! I can''t wait to see the new stone and what you decide. Personally though, I don''t know if I would halo a stone that size. My stone is only 2.52 carats and with the halo it covers a lot of finger estate. What size ring do you wear? I don''t know the exact size of the halo stones on mine but they are small, somewhere between 1-2 mm in width.
 
I am a total size girl, yet I would go setting w/o halo---it would be to over the top with a huge oval. I think it may may the ring look costumey as opposed to elegant and elite......

What about pairing it with an eternity band for more sparkle? Or making it a 3 stone ring?

As for your husbands comment about turning off other men with the ring- any man who would hit on a woman with ring on her left hand wedding finger won''t be deterred no matter what size the rock!
 
I think a halo would look awesome around a 3 carat oval! I have a 4.19 round with a thin halo and it looks beautiful - not costumey at all. I have very thin fingers(size 3) but my fingers are long and the ring isn''t overpowering at all. My halo is pretty thin - 1/2 pointers and I am now considering changing to 1 1/2 pointers for a bit more sparkle. For your ring I''d be afraid 5 pointers in the halo will be a bit too big. Have you seen a halo in person with 5 pointers? I think the max I''ve seen is about 2 points. Just my opinion though!
 
i was thinking the same thing that lvnut posted - 1 pointers, 2 pointers, maybe even 3 pointers would probably look great in a halo for your diamond, but larger might be too much and overpowering to your diamond, the design, and your hand (especially 5 pointers). however, i don''t have first-hand experience. that was my thought based on pouring over the many gorgeous rings on pricescope for a while now and seeing different combinations. i echo the advice given to you already of trying to see some in person with different size stones so you can get an idea, if possible.

I wouldn''t halo it either, honestly. But if you want to... I''d keep it to a VERY thin, fine halo 1.5mm or less.
 
Sorry guys, I reread my post & I didnt get my thoughts out well enough. I was referring to 5 point stones in the SHANK, not around the halo. LOL Can you imagine how big that would be! LOL Maybe if I had my husband''s 13 1/2 size fingers it might fly.

Sounds like you pretty much have the ring set by your husband, & going with the flow is gonna save you some sanity. I would stick to 1 point stones for the melee. I have some rings with 1 point & I cant imagine the stone any smaller.

A dumb question...but does anyone know off the top of their heads how large Katie Holmes''s oval is? Personally, I really like her halo-ed oval; I think it''s a gorgeous combination.

And is this the type of setting you''re thinking about? With the "criss-cross halo"? (Imagine it with an oval instead of a radiant). Really, I think it would be heavenly if the halo was kept in proportion to the stone. And of course, I definitely wouldn''t wear a wedding band with it.

Ok...so I just looked up the mm to carat size conversion for ovals, and it seems like an oval of about 3 carats would be 10 x 8mm (somebody correct me if I''m wrong). I remember msflutter''s ruby halo was about 9 x 7, and I thought that was a really nice size with a halo. Maybe, though, it would look different with a diamond. I hope she doesn''t mind, but I posted pics of it below in case they''re helpful:

I think that if you are doing a halo the stones should be tiny. Personally, I think Katie Holme''s ring is over done. It does not look like an engagement ring to me. It looks like a cocktail ring.
