Hi all, I just got a really lovely 18ct gold safety pin with a .50 carat diamond on one end. I had originally thought to get a long guard chain with two dog clips to attach it to, but now it’s here I don’t think it would work. I can’t figure it out so thought I’d ask the experts! I hat do you guys think? How should I wear it? 0E6208D3-A9B5-4A5D-A1A2-37CABC6F9DBB.png

Love it !
What about getting a bail attached at one end and wearing it longwise ?

Thank you!! I tried that with my one and only necklace and it didn’t look right, maybe it wasn’t long enough? I think I have my heart set on sideways or maybe diagonally? I just haven’t a clue how to do it and don’t have a selection to try it on!

Diagonal sounds good !

Have a pin and latch put on the back and wear as a brooch??

@StephanieLynn I love your OEC..What is the size and color? I know you told me before but I forgot..:roll

If you want to wear it sideways, could you get a jeweller to add two small jump rings to the top ends? Then you can connect it permanently to a thin chain as a necklace, or add larger jump rings for a watch chain with two dog clips as you envisioned. Like this (I drew on the two loops in white):2.png

Or if you'd like to still retain the option to wear it alone as a safety pin (if it's currently functional as one - I can't tell!), you might be able to the jeweller to add two hidden little gold "hooks" on the back like on many convertible Victorian pieces. I'll get a photo of one of my Victorian earrings tomorrow if that's not clear. This is a cute piece!

Oh that sounds ideal, thank you! It’s completely functioning as a safety pin, but I think it’s destined to be on my neck! I had to have it when I saw it, it spoke to me. I love things that I won’t see on everyone. I almost bought a solitaire pendant instead but figured this would be harder to find again so nabbed it. If I attached like you have drawn above I could also attach things to the safety pin itself!

I agree this is a much more exciting find than a solitaire pendant. And antique/vintage oversized safety pins go so fast, even the plain ones!

That's awesome it's functional, so yay it'll make a perfect charm holder indeed. Sweet!

Yes I was delighted when it arrived, it looked much better than the photos! I think I’m going to go and see about attaching the bales. I’m thinking a thinner/delicate curb link chain. I’ll let you all know how I get on!!

LOVE your safety pin!!! It's really pretty. I have an antique brooch that was converted in a similar manner as recommended. I really like it fixed horizontal. I have had more compliments on this conversion than almost any other piece.

@Gussie that is fabulous!! No wonder you get so many compliments, it’s beautiful!! That looks exactly how I want mine, thank you!

Do you think I could thread it through the links of a necklace to lie diagonally?
I love this idea but not sure how to make it lie diagonally?

I’ve ordered a cheapy chain to test this out, I’m not sure it will work either…

Have fun experimenting
Even the most beautiful jewlery should still have fun !

And keep posting pictures
Good luck

I wonder...if you wanted this to lay somewhat on a diagonal, as opposed to horizontal, if placing the jump ring on the right side at the "top" of the head instead, and with the weight of the diamond pulling it downward/center on your neck, if that would accomplish this? Using goldnsilver's image:

I can see why! It’s so pretty!

Oh this is something else to consider! I’m going to experiment with chains over the next few days!

Got some photos. Here's what I mean by adding little hooks as an alternative to jump ring loops. This is an antique earring of mine (the pearl dangle is a new replacement - hope it's all right to include it in the pictures here as it's for demonstrative purposes rather than showing as a gemstone) that's got one to allow the bottom dangle to be removed. On brooch-to-pendant conversions the hooks would be other way around (upside down as compared to this) of course. And the hook can be set lower to be hidden on the back as well, although now that I think about it, that particular placement probably wouldn't let you safety pin hang properly due to the lack of "bottom weight".

It's pretty nifty for changing out pendants and chains on pieces more easily. I'd probably recommend higher karat gold (14k or 18k) if you ever do these hooks, so that the metal is more malleable.

Thank you @goldnsilver that makes perfect sense now I see it! They are beautiful earrings, I love the addition of the drop pearls! I like this idea, and love that the idea of making them less visible.
