Dear all,

I've been looking around online for a pale lemon yellow oval sapphire to buy for my girlfriend's engagement ring. Only a couple of sites have had the colour that I'm looking for and as I want a sapphire of good quality that is reasonably priced, it would be great to hear your opinions about these two that I've come across. I am seriously considering buying one or the other. Or if you've seen similar ones that I might be interested in, please let me know! Cheers.

pic1_13.jpg The first one is 3.81 carat and measures 10.29 x 7.85 x 5.31, costing $1857, GIA certified. http://www.starruby.in/store/yellow...ia-certified-natural-unheated-yellow-sapphire See picture 1.

pic2_7.jpg The other one is 1.89 carat and measures 7.88L x 6.20W x 4.93H, costing $1323. This one I would mount with a halo. http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompan...sapphires/p-39390-oval-yellow-sapphire-y2787/ See picture 2.

OP - based on the two images provided by the vendor, the 1st sapphire you link to appears to have a wonky/lopsided cut and/or a window - it could just be poor quality images so you might check to see if the vendor is willing to provide additional photos and hopefully a video of the stone.

The 2nd sapphire you link to is from the Natural Sapphire Company -if you search the PS site for this company, you will see numerous threads and posts indicating the company is not considered reputable by PSers. Even if you chose to disregard that reputation, I would not consider buying a stone that is self-evaluated by the vendor... meaning the certificate NSC provides for that sapphire was generated by itself, which I find untrustworthy business practices.

GemFix is a highly regarded vendor which has several yellow sapphires that appear to meet your color preferences and budget (though mostly round and cushion shapes) - http://www.gemfix.com/sapphire_yellow_orange.html - several of them come with AGL reports - AGL is commonly regarded as perhaps the best laboratory to evaluate colored gemstones. You might inquire with GemFix to see if they have any ovals which are not posted on their website.

Does it have to be an oval?

I concur 100% with mary on what she wrote. The first one is little to not appealing at all to me. The second one is from NSC and I wouldn't give them my business.

Finewater has an beautiful emerald cut yellow sapphire that I'm extremely tempted to buy. Not sure if that would work for you or not.

If budget is not a constraint, would a Fancy Light Yellow diamond be of any interest?
:$$):

You haven't mentioned whether oval is a must, but the more limitations put on what one wants, the harder the search. Light yellow AND confining shape to oval will take longer to find. It's do-able, just not as quickly.

What is your budget? What treatment, if any, is acceptable to you? You might take a look at this thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-to-coloured-gemstone-buying-read-this-first.174284/ for some background before committing to a stone. Chrono recently wrote an excellent post on sapphire buying, too, but I can't seem to find it now.

Gemfix does have some light yellow sapphires -- vendors seldom put all their stock online, so you might ask if they have others or could source something for you.

Though I'm no diamond expert, in addition to fancy light yellow, some of the "lower" colors of diamonds approach pale yellow. Good luck!

You typically don't see FLY diamonds in an oval. Most fancy colors are RB, radiants, cushions etc which help show the color. There are some ovals but it might be difficult to find. I think right now DBL has a .74ct FY for just over 2k. If it were a FLY it would be cheaper so you might need to call around.

It had been requested in the past but the mods say we have too many stickies which just adds to the clutter. I guess it can be tacked on to the "new to buying coloured gems" sticky thread.

Done. I attached it to the New To Colored Gem Buying thread. Unfortunately the photos didn't transfer, but the urls to them did, so I hyperlinked those & other links, bolded subject headings to make it easier to read, & eliminated posts that didn't add info. I'm knocked out by the amount of knowledge there, Chrono. Much too valuable to have it buried in archives. So you're fixed up there for good!

Will you laugh if I link to it in my signature? It would be so much easier to say "please read the link posted below!"

My initial reaction was to laugh almost uncontrollably then I realized that SB is a genius! No more looking up that link, cutting and pasting. No more telling posters to read this or that first because it is all right there. :cheeky:

Thanks for the advice so far everyone,

I ended up having a look at gemfix and there was a sapphire there that matched my requirements and looked awesome.
Only thing though is I've opened up a can of worms by looking into fancy yellow diamonds. Plus I've upped my budget to the 3000 mark.
I've had a look at FLY diamonds and for $3000, I'm looking at rocks with dimensions of about 5x7mm compared to the sapphires 6x8mm.
So I guess there are two questions now.
1. A yellow sapphire or a light yellow coloured diamond?
2. If I chose the 5x7mm diamond, will it work in such a setting? (see below)

1. Light yellow diamond
2. Yes, the halo setting will work.

I was looking at this oval fly from leibish on my own fly search. I asked for extra info and video but didn't get a response, maybe you'll be luckier ;)

It is also currently on sale. I am a complete novice here so others would be able to advise you if it's a good stone or not. Good luck with your search.
