this is sad on so many levels. our tax dollars being wasted, the population getting further pissed at the US, people going w/o services, cultural differences, etc.

Go from no health care at all to waiting in lines and complain about it.

dont let terrorists run your country next time and build your own buildings.
Its time to get out of that hell hole.

Iv talked to people who were glad to help and even put there own money into projects who are fed up with ungratefull people wanting a hand out.
You want a building then build it dont sit on your butt and expect the US to build it.

In the northern part where some of the worst weather and conditions are is where the projects are the farthest along where the areas the terrorists ran are crappy.
I say tough and move our resouces north where they are welcomed.

the area a friend of mine was in hadnt had a doctor since the russians killed theres when they invaded way back when.
His unit built a clinic with there own funds using local materials and material sent by friends in the US.
Its been up and running for a long while now.
They locals will and have killed people for messing with or stealing from the clinic.


schools never existed in a lot of areas and in a lot of places are a strange concept.
The kids worked.
Only the wealthy and connected got educated any place but home if even that.
You have to remember this is not modern life a lot of these people have lived the same way for thousands of years with little change.
You cant look at it with American eyes.
Which is why a lot of these projects fail.

As for warlord the culture there is one of tribes and they dont get along with each other for long and likely never will.
You can jerk people into the 21st century that have no clue what it is and no desire to learn.
Same with trying to force western values on them it isnt going to happen and will lead to war if tried.
Remember these same guys kicked the Russians hard enough to send them crying home.

It depends on the tribe, The worst areas for women were the talibon controlled areas and a lot of that has been relaxed but not to the extent the western world would like.
Its not going to happen overnight if at all.
In some of the other tribal areas women are much better treated and in some tribes even fight in battles and have a say in running the tribe.
In a lot of ways you can compare them to the american indians.
Each tribe had their own culture, rules and traditions.
To look at them as being all the same and trying to get them to mold themselves to fit our ideals in a fast manner is going to end up just like the russians did.
The best we can do is help set them on a course but its up to them to follow it.
If you study the history of the country you will find they have been invaded thousands of times and never conquered totaly.
When forced they can conform but as soon as the force is removed they generaly go back to doing what they were doing before.
Which is mostly killing each other.

two things come to mind: 1-you can lead a horse to water but you can''t force it to drink and more importantly 2-did anyone ask these people if they wanted to become like us? we have no right to assume that our way is the right way for all people and that everyone wants to be just like us.

I am not sure what exactly Richard calls 'conservative' - this sounds pretty darn progressive to me.

Well you see Richard Hughes is under the impression that im a conservative, using the definition of 1776 maybe I am but I certainly don't like the the liberals that call themselves conservatives today.
There is no true Conservative political party in the U.S.
We have the very leftists and the leftists.
They are all central govermentists hell bent on taking rights that belong to the people and the states and tromping all over them.

The best that can be hoped for is a stalemate where little or nothing gets done to slow down the decline.
The patriot act would have never passed with a democrat in the white house.
