a couple of questions regarding AGL grading reports:

1. how hard is it to get a 1-2 for color in the "new" reports? has anyone ever seen one? i have read that pre-2009, 1-2's were virtually impossible to obtain. how "hard" is it now?

2. in terms of tqir, how rare is an overall excellent grade? very good?

3. what is the difference between "classic" burma vs. "regular" burma?

thanks all.

I suggest you email AGL and ask them these questions. I think ABGF got an overall rating of "Excellent to Very Good" on her red spinel, so it does happen.

SS could you post the answers if and when you receive a response from them? We'd all be interested in learning...

Silk,

Classic Burma means old mine, Mogok as opposed to New Mine of Mong Hsu. I have never seen a color grade of 1 on a gem report. I asked Chris Smith about that after he graded one of my rubies. He said he had seen one #1.

There is another grade, exceptional but that is reserved for Excellent quality stones in rare large sizes. A six carat ruby might garner that grade but a six carat sapphire would not due to the relative availability of gems in those sizes.

A grade of excellent is as rare as stones of excellent quality.

Came across this thread during a search, so decided to reply. I acquired a 2ct Mogok ruby a few years ago that Chris rated as a 2 color and Excellent grade. He mentioned that it was fairly rare to get that grade.

Classic Burma is only on rubies, right? That's not used for spinel, right?

Well, I used to have one ruby, and its color was graded 2.5 (or is it 2... too old to remember :lol-2::lol-2:). However it was an old AGL report without colored pic on it,. I am not sure if it fall under "pre1999" u are refering

Interesting that the "Classic" designation is also a proxy for overall "top quality" in AGL-speak:
