Airport Security?

My girlfriend thinks I''m taking her to New York for New Years, but she''s in for a surprise when we get to New York and hop on a plane to Rome. We will be staying at the Hotel Fontana Di Trevi, right in front of the Trevi Fountain. I have reservations for dinner at the St. Regis Hotel for New Years Eve. What I plan on doing is this. Before dinner I am going to asking her to follow me to the fountain to make a New Years Eve wish. I am taking a portable cd player with me and before we make our wish, I am going to ask her to dance with me. The song I have chosen is Frank Sinatra’s “Fly me to the Moon”. After the dance I will ask her to make her wish, and of course she is going to want me to make my wish. Knowing my girlfriend she is going to ask me what I wished for and that is when I will get on one knee and tell her my wish. The only thing I’m worried about is getting the ring through airport security. Has anyone had a problem with this?

If you stick it in your pocket it shouldn''t get off the metal detectors. I routinely go through with my wedding set and my plat right hand ring without problems. Just make sure you take off your belt and everything else to minimize the chance of those setting off the detectors.

re: airport - I agree, put it in your pocket, take off everything metal etc, but if it does go off, tell them quietly that the ring is there, I am sure they will be discreet.

edited to add - I saw this advice on another thread weeks ago: take a pic of you with the ring in the US so they don't think you bought it in Italy. unlikely, but you never know

Make sure she has her passport!!!

If you have a carryon bag, maybe you should put the ring in there for it to go through the xray machine, just in case they make you empty your pockets...you wouldn''t want her to find out early. Then you can "go to the bathroom" and put the ring back in your pocket.

put in the carry on then you will have no problems. some detectors at set at different rates. some will go off with a gum wrapper. don''t risk it place it in the carry on then put it back in your pocket in the bathroom. i work at airport know the drill!

I agree with the above... the last thing you need is to have the ring on you going through the detectors and have them wand you down as she watches. I would think that putting it in your carry on and holding on to that thing tight is the best idea. I do agree that you want to get it out prior to getting on the plane or setting the bag down at the airport.
