hi CEP,

i felt better about talking about this here so as not to intrude on that other thread. i have two papillons and they are wonderful city dogs and just the most loving and loyal creatures you could imagine. but, they are really small. what kind of dog was your maxx?

Hi Reena,

Thanks!

Maxx was a Cocker Spanial. Great little dog, but I''d like to go with something a little more manly this time...A bit more of a sporting or fun dog, if you will. I''ve even thought about a Springer Spanial but they''re a little too high strung and probably wouldn''t like being in the house alone all day.

That''s my prblem, I want an active dog, but he won''t probably have too active of a life...

What''s with these Paps (What''s the full name?) Are they Cocker small or Chuhuahua small?

Thanks for starting this thread. I didn''t mean to highjack the other - I just get carried away talking about my pap.

She is a little large for a pap, although she is (just) under 11". During her show days she was about 8 pounds, but unfortunately I let her gain weight since and she''s 11 pounds now. I have carried other paps who feel light as a feather compared to mine (mine feels like lifting a rock by comparison!). My dog''s father, for example, was only six pounds.

I expected a typical lap dog when I bought her, and I couldn''t have been more wrong. At puppy class, she ran with the big collies (who she thought were more fun than the little dogs). She is fast, and I wasn''t surprised to learn later that paps generally do well in agility competitions (where dogs like border collies usually compete). She is a good jumper, too. She is not at all agressive with people or other dogs, but she is a fierce hunter of small critters and vermin - she enjoys a good kill, for sport.

I think they are perfect house dogs because they are very clean. They do not have an undercoat, which I personally think is why they don''t have a "doggy" smell. Also, her fur is unique in that when she gets dirt on her, she simply shakes herself and the dirt is gone. There must be something about the fur that dirt doesn''t stick to. And, even though the coat is on the longer side, her fur doesn''t really mat - she needs less grooming (once a week brushing only) then most people think. My german shepherd needed more grooming.

I previously had a german shepard who died of cancer. Nine years later, I was finally able to face having another dog, but I didn''t want one that was too similar, so that''s how I ended up with the pap. I was very glad to have found this breed!

Oops. Didn''t see the other post first.

It''s full name is "Papillon" - because the large erect ears look like butterfly wings.

Although small-ish, the ones I''ve been around are not at all skittish or high-strung, but then I think that also depends on the breeder. I would highly recommend this breed.

no worries, jolie, if anyone hijacked that thread it was me.

i ADORE my papillons. they are in the spaniel family, like your cocker CEP, which i personally think is a good dog "family". and i just love their coloring. (mine are mostly brown and white, but they do have a little black in spots so perhaps they are "tri"s.) they are simply the happiest, friendliest, most loyal and loving creatures you could ever imagine. our female, sophia, is tiny--6 pounds soaking wet--but she is the more independent one. she''s still very loving, but does like to be off on her own a little more. the male, roosevelt, is HUGE for a pap--almost 12 pounds! he''s not really fat, he''s just sort of built like a linebacker. his chest is shaped like a keg. lol. he is the biggest sweetie pie of all time--if i sit on the couch, he immediately comes over and lays next to me and puts his chin on my leg. if i LIE DOWN on the couch, he jumps right up on my chest and lays down on it, with one paw on either side of my neck, rests his chin on my chest and looks at me with those big brown eyes. he makes my heart melt.

all of that being said, i can assure you that these dogs are not particularly manly, CEP. they make cocker spaniels look like pit bulls. lol. i''ll post some more pics of them in a minute so you can get a better idea.

jolie, i totally agree with you about their coats--they are like dirt repellant! even when mine haven''t had a bath in weeks, people always comment on how clean and white they look. (if they only knew . . .) the only really bad thing is that they shed . . . but most dogs do that.

i''m going to get yelled at for posting these cause they''re the same pics i always post of my babies--but whatever, you guys haven''t seen them yet.

here is what roosevelt (we call him the velt or velter) looked like when he was a little pup. (you may recognize his head from my avatar.)

here is a picture of the velt all grown up. he is very regal.

Your paps are so handsome! I don''t really have digital pictures of my Noelle (although I know I should get with the times). Most of the time she''s playing in the mud, anyway. I''m always yelling at her, "Get out of the mud!" She''s more like your Roosevelt - more on the solid side than the dainty side.

You''re very lucky to have such cuties.

she is a LOVER!

i just love all little paps.

Okay, if we are showing off our babies, I''ve got to include my two girls - Ashley, the oldest, and Charlotte. Both are tri cocker spaniels. They are the joy of our lives. We did have a red and white years ago and SHE was really my soul mate but I do love these girls too. I think people get with a breed and it becomes ''their'' breed. I know I''ve had cockers all my life - even as a little girl.

OK...It looks like these guys are about the size of Pomeranians?

My neighbor has one...Coolest little dog!! But I''m pretty sure I want something just a bit bigger than that.

But thanks for the info!!

This is a question for paps owners. Are these dogs very closely related to the Cavalier King Charles. They are both spaniels, but these look a lot closer than others from that family. All of the pictures look very similar, except for the ears, and the traits that Jolie posted sound identical, the hunting and all. My neighbors growing up had 4 or 5 King Charles Spaniels and they were great little dogs. They acted the same way as Reena says her dos do when you sit or lie down. All in all a great dog that falls into the "lap dog" category.

yes, i agree, the two breeds look quite similar. i LOVE cavaliers. IMO the cavaliers tend to be built a little "sturdier"; they''re a little less "dainty" looking. (my roosevelt is pretty darn sturdy, but he seems to be the exception rather than the rule.) they also have different snouts and eyes. but very close. as CEP said, paps also remind me a lot of poms in the way that they are put together, if that makes any sense. i think poms tend to be a little smaller, but not much.

CEP, sounds to me like a springer spaniel might be a good option for you. not too big, but decent sized and manly. if you go through a good breeder, i think you should be fine temperment wise.

LOVE these puppies...Reena, what cracks me up big time about the pic of Velt as a puppy is that he looks like he''s smirking. It gets me every time. SO, today is THE DAY!!!!!!!

Hmmm. A papillon thread! The perfect place to stash some photos of Tallulah, my 3 year-old, 6 lb. fur baby (as requested by a certain dog-luvin'' moderator)
