So, rather than keep too much on the daniel m thread (which I hope dies a natural death soon because things are better and all his customers are happy), I thought I'd finally post about my fishtank gravel topaz. It's hard to believe all that stress over a $40 stone, LOL.

Anyway, it's about half a carat, and came from Jerry Newman. It's a pretty weak golden champagney color, but a good bit more yellow than my bigger topaz from mastercut. Here's a horrible picture of it inside the box and plastic bag after getting it back Friday:

I'll take some more tonight - it is really beautifully cut, which is why it was so hard to find. It turns out very small topaz in not-phenomenal colors aren't worth a lot of time and effort. They're easy to get from places that sell jewelry supplies, in calibrated sizes, but you all have ruined me and I prefer well cut now.

I had initially planned something like this for it:

My drawing is horrible, the stone is rounder than that.

Any other ideas you may have would be welcome. I want a pretty little birthstone ring out of this deal (eventually... it's probably going to be a while before I get it set). I like the outdoors and nature so I wanted something sorta-organic for it.

I like your design very much. My only concern would be that the leaves would catch on clothing and bend. Here is an inspiration pic with a 5 to 6 mm stone that is organic and lovely. Might be a bit much, but maybe not.

Ohh, I really like that, Lisa.

Great find Lisa!

I love champagne-colored topaz every since I had a gorgeous vintage topaz ring from my grandmother that I unfortunately lost in college. I think your setting idea will be perfect for it.

Have you checked out Adzia on Etsy? They do a lot of rings with leaf-motifs, they made the ring in my avatar and were great to work with. Super responsive and fast, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their work.

Glad you have the stone back deskjockey!!
I love the organic design Lisa found.

Its amazing to realize how many topazes there are on PS with huge sentimental attachment. DJ, I don't think I've ever seen a topaz quite that yellow. I hope you create something magnificent with it.

I actually found a very similar small stone, different color, but with the same sort of saturation level (non ideal color, a bit washed out maybe, but beautiful). It's a different shape, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't ask for it for mothers' day, and make the stones my "leaves" in a sort of mismatched bypass or something.

hmmmmmmmm
