Probably a silly question, but does anyone know if getting a dress significantly shortened (as iin from floor length to cocktail length) would cost more than only getting it hemmed (i.e. an inch or two)?

Depends on a lot of factors. If it''s a simple A-line, with no train to be cut off, then having it shortened shouldn''t be any more than a hem.

BUT if you need to have a train shortened/reshaped as well, and/or the entire bottom of the dress needs to be reshaped as well (i.e., it''s not an a-line and to maintain the look the bottom needs to be redone) it can get pricey FAST.

Also depends on what decorations are on the skirt and if you want them saved in the final dress design. Think lace trim, beading, etc.

I''m having a problem like that. My dress is really long, and will need to be shortened a good six or seven inches (I''m 5''1). I don''t know how much to expect to pay for alterations, but don''t want to pay a fortune for it! Unfortunately, I live in the Cincinnati area and can''t find anyone who will do it relatively inexpensively. Sorry to thread-jack!

Unfortunately for wedding dresses you need to pay for each LAYER that gets altered, which can get very very pricey fast if you have a big poufy dress.

Unfortunately, I think anything in the $100-200 range for hem alterations is "reasonable".

Thanks for the responses so far :)

However, I should have clarified that this is for my BM''s skirts. They are Alfred Angelo floor lenght organza over satin skirts. No beading but, yes, there is that second layer. Do you think they charge the same for something like that as they would for a wedding gown?

Not at my bridal shop. They especially love to screw the brides on alterations, so they charge quite a bit less for BM dresses.

But honestly? If it''s simple I would just bring it to a regular tailor. No need to have the bridal shop do it.

Why have the bridal shop do alerations on the braidsmaids gowns? I would bring it to a nieghborhood tailor.
