I am searching for a white gold (or even silver at this point) blue/ green (Teal) or olive green sapphire necklace as a birthday gift from my finance to me. I want to be able to see the stone, so I would prefer it to face up like 2 or more carats. I'm on the fence about heated or not heated. Is it worth it to buy a heated gemstone ? Since I couldn't find reasonably priced necklace on line, I decided maybe the better option would be to purchase the stone separately and have someone set it for me. Which has opened a bunch of new questions like should I go to the jewelry store or find someone on line ? I'm not buying it as an investment so I don't care where the stone comes from or if it's AAAA , but I would like the stone to have a nice cut, sparkle and it be nice enough to be a worthy piece of jewelry to pass down to my granddaughter someday. I would like to say around the $500 range, but he would be willing to pay more for something I loved. Maybe I'm asking for too much. Thoughts? Ideas ? I found these stones and I really like their color- why do you think ?

$500 for a 2ct plus unheated sapphire with good sparkle and then set into jewellery I think is going to be a stretch. You've mentioned you want a teal colour but you've linked to green sapphires that have a hint of blue zoning. Is that what you want?

You've asked whether it's worth buying a heated sapphire? Yes why not! It will certainly help with the budget but for the size you want (and then add in the construction of the pendant) it may not come within budget.

Have you considered a lab stone maybe? Gene from Precision Cut Gems can cut a blue sapphire with hints of teal to $115 per carat so that would get you in budget AND you'd be guaranteed a precision cut (not sure if that's what you're after).

In terms of size - you've mentioned 2ct or above BUT what size does that mean to you (in mm)? The reason I ask is that you can get a 2ct gemstone that faces up small and my only be 6x6 but then you can get a shallow cut that may be 8x8 or larger. Those are rough dimensions.

This one faces up large http://www.customgemstones.com/SAPPHIRE/sa2022.html

Not the colour you asked for and not a sapphire but this is huge and within price range and would make a lovely pendant https://www.gemrite.com/topaz/99-blue-topaz-463-cts.html

I need to add a disclaimer here .......... I have never purchased from any of the following so you need to do some due diligence if you buy from them!

How about this? Ready made - in budget - teal sapphire - 14k gold and the only difference is it's multiple sapphires rather than one single stone. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/881...00711429e93c73c6d38f227e7368099a3b7:881054913

Maybe a vendor to contact to see if they have anything in budget https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/737...ant&ref=sr_gallery-1-9&organic_search_click=1

Yes, I had a feeling it would be a stretch. I love blue / greens - so I would go for the combination of the two or either one of the two colors. I also love olive greens. I'm trying to be flexible. The research I have done suggested that unheated was the way to go.

He's willing to over, I just don't want to go by $1000.00 :) I am trying to be considerate with the price.

No, I really don't want lab created, I'd rather go with a gemstone from the earth.

I was looking at ovals and cushion cuts, I guess 9.0 by 6.4 ? I wanted it to face up like a 2 carat. I have only my engagement to go by, and for a pendant I wanted something larger.

This is gorgeous, it's an idea for sure - thanks !

I was actually looking at the blue topaz first, because the color is stunning. I decided to go with the sapphire because I read that blue topaz's are always treated and not just by heat.

I actually asked her about this necklace ! It's very pretty, I was looking for white though.

Thank you so much !

Thank you so much for all your help, I really appreciate it you gave me alot to think about !

I don't think you're being unrealistic but you might possibly get something you're happier with if you can broaden what you'd consider a bit. A few thoughts and of course just my opinion:

I've found the most important thing - to me- is simply having something pretty and showy. Those are the pieces I will wear the most and for the longest amount of time (though of course it also has to be durable enough to last).

So if my budget didn't stretch far enough to get what I knew fit the above, I'd choose something less expensive that did. To me, that's a good compromise whereas settling for a smaller or not as high quality stone that I really wanted would not be.

Heated sapphires are more bang for the buck than unheated, and lab sapphires (same chemical structure as mined sapphires) are even more bang for the buck. With all of them, cut is very important for beauty. Precision cut stones with many more facets than the usual quick cutting job are definitely worth it. Also, sapphires are small for their carat size so if you don't know, be aware that a two carat sapphire may be considerably smaller in appearance than a two carat diamond.

You could also go with a less expensive natural stone than sapphire. Tourmaline, zircon, aquamarine, spinel, etc. You might also consider sticking with the approved vendors on the sticky on this site, since they've been vetted by many users here.

ETA: Or, on a $500 budget, you might do better to look at somewhere like Ross Simons and pick a whole jewelry piece rather than buying a stone and setting separately. (A setting also has to have the right depth to fit a stone and custom made settings can get pricy).

I did read that. I didn't know it would be considerable though.

I agree, I was think of maybe a spinel, and I read that they should go for $100.00 a carat, yet I find that some of them are very expensive. I might have to keep looking. My fiancé is getting impatient since my birthday was the 7th and I still haven't choose a gift !

Another good point - thank you !

I love green saphires especially getting into the forests and olives

Good luck in your search

I know right ! I lean more towards the greens than the blues. I may have to go with either another stone or go for a smaller size. Thank you !
