How easy is it to find clean amethyst? Just wondering because I looked at emeralds, pink sapphires, and amethysts on my honeymoon (jewelry stores recommended by the cruise line), and the amethysts were so clean! Are eye-clean amethysts easy to come by in under 1ct, or could they be sims?

On another note, At Columbian Emeralds in Grand Cayman, we looked at some gorgeous ec emerald pendants. One was incredibly clean, feathers in the steps under a loupe only, not a great cut (thanks PS!!!) - it was windowed, and the color had something to be desired. Another darker, better cut ec emerald pendant had way more visible inclusions, still very pretty.

Clean amethyst can be almost any weight - think pounds... Look here - they are pretty, but definitely not the largest chunks out there.

And there is allot of syntetic too. Almost no one bothers to tell them apart because of the low cost of either natural or syntetic. Syntetics are easier to find and match, that the most difference between lab made and natural I am affraid.

Thanks Ana! You're the best.

The reason I ask is because on the cruise ship they had loose gemstones for sale, starting at $10/ct. I found a beautiful pair of amethyst pears at 1.7 ctw that hubby liked too, so I bought them. Someday they'll be earrings. I just wanted to know if they should be this clean or if there was a high chance they were sims, but for $17, I don't think I care much if they are sim.

I'll try to post some pics of them soon. They aren't perfectly matched in size and shape, but very very close. One is more "pointed" than the other.

Hi Ana,

A freind of mine just told me they discovered a 4 foot by 3 foot clear amethyst crystal they are trying to get out of a mine in Cambodia without damaging it.

That crystal would look fabulous in the garden

It would but it would probubly bleach out. I had a blue flourite crystal I put under a japanese maple that bleached. I also forgot and left out a blue spodumine (same as kunzite) out on a table that was hit by direct sunlight for a few days and it is now clear.
