Amethyst: Which Metal?

I’m interested in acquiring some amethyst pieces and am unsure which metal complements the stone best. I have some 1990s marcasite amethyst pieces in silver from department stores back in the day so am now leaning toward gold for variety. But does white metal really suit amethyst best? Here’s the same piece is white gold and rose gold for comparison ( photo not mine). Thanks so much!IMG_2742.png

Good question. I usually see YG but that may be cost-driven (back when gold was cheaper). Most of the purple sapphires I see are set in platinum so I think either is fine. In fact, if I were trying to distinguish a stone from amethyst -- like a lavender or violet spinel or a sapphire -- I would go with white metal.

As to yellow vs. rose gold, I usually think of yellow but will leave it to others here who may have experimented more. It also matters how vivid the amethyst (I am now thinking of the almost red-purple deeper and super-vivid Siberian, etc.)

Thank you! I agree that yellow gold seems more common. And so interesting about which metals would help distinguish from amethyst and the shade of amethyst in question. Really, really good points!

I agree with LilAlex... white or yellow would look great. The undertone of the amethyst can make a difference too. If it is a warmer shade (with pink or red tones), perhaps yellow might complement it best. If it is a cooler shade (with violet or blue tones), perhaps white might suit it better. Rose would likely be my least favorite pairing with amethyst, but I'm sure it could still work nicely. Good luck!

Everyone loves citrine, I think the purple color is also beautiful, creating a highlight and enhancing the gentle beauty of the wearer.

What a great idea to let the stone choose the color! Thank you!

Oxidized silver would be my choice for a deep purple gem. Inexpensive and moody.

My jeweler hit a home run! Yellow gold bezel necklace equivalent to 0.75 ct and 4-mm yellow gold studs. I’m really pleased:-) Thanks for all the input and guidance!
