This article in, "The New York Times" describes movement to the Left in South and Central America. If I were an American (which I am) I would watch what the CIA starts doing in South and Central America now (which I am). (Starts doing? I mean starts doing with greater force!)

If any sudden coups occur, I would look for a friendly CIA agent in the neighborhood! This shift in popular sentiment-the fair election of a leader the United States did not like-was what brought the horror of Pinochet's junta into Chile and caused the torture and death of once-free Chileans!

South Americans should be on their guard if they dare to elect people the US does not like!

I had the good luck of spending a few weeks in Colombia in 1992, where I was introduced to the arpillera. In fact, I bought one large enough to cover much of a wall!

Women started the arpillera in Chile. It was a secret way in which women could communicate and protest the torture and killing done by the Pinochet regime.

"Although the organized efforts of the women were not intended to be works of art, they have served to record events and the horror in the daily lives of their creators.

Recurring in the arpilleras are elements such as the photos, images, and names of the missing and sewn words and expressions such as 'Where are they?' The tapestries often have a 'relief' quality and are far from two-dimensional pictures. The scrap material and stitching that ultimately create the bold lines and forms allows the viewer to perceive the determination and boldness in these Chilean women.

Agosin has written about the arpilleras in the illustrated history of the movement, Threads of Hope, Threads of Love. Isabel Allende, the author of House of Spirits and niece of Salvador Allende, who was ousted from power by the Pinochet coup (1973-89), wrote the foreword to the account of the arpillerista movement arose in protest against Pinochet."

don''t discount venezuela and chavez.....just because he''s paranoid does not mean we''re not out to get him! besides he wants to nationalize all that oil that we think our corporations should be controlling and selling to us for an arm and a leg.....and also let''s not forget his offer to send oil to poor people effected by katrina. however, china now has a contract with him so the CIA may have to tread a little more lightly: we certainly don''t want china to stop making the loans that keep this country afloat and at war in iraq.
