Well, not so much as careless proposal, but getting caught in the moment and forgetting to take care of things.
Here is the article.

=======================
CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Lawrence Waterhouse III pulled out all the stops — and all the candles — when he proposed marriage to his girlfriend in the gazebo outside his suburban home.

"He had set it up very, very nicely," Chappaqua Fire Chief Andy Metz said Thursday. "He had candles in the trees, candles and dogwood petals along the path, a chandelier with votive candles."

The girlfriend apparently said yes to the romantic Wednesday night proposal, and the couple left town early Thursday for a trip out west, Metz said. Unfortunately, at least one of the candles apparently stayed lit.

"We got the call about 7:15 this morning, and when I got there five minutes later the gazebo was fully involved in flames," the chief said. "Luckily, nothing else burned."

Metz tracked down Waterhouse at a New York airport and told him about the fire, but advised him to continue with his trip.

"Nobody was hurt, so I told him to go ahead with his vacation," the chief said. "He gave me his brother''s number, and the brother told me about the proposal."

The chief said the fire was "a unique event."

"We''ve had candle fires, of course, but I can''t remember one at this level of romance."

That''s a sweet idea for a proposal but it was at night~ how did he not see the candles were lit?? I guess "love" made him lose his head...

wow I sound bitter lol...

LOL...d''oh!!

It could have been caused by a small piece of wick that was still hot enough to burn falling onto the dry gazebo wood. I''m no fire inspector but...we once had a fire start this way at a campsite. At some point during the evening an ember escaped from the fire pit and burned itself through the brush on the ground to a root network just below. Some of the roots must have been dead and dry because the fire raged under ground and we had no clue until hours and hours had passed and we noticed the ground was smoking. When we went to the smoke to try and stomp out what we thought was a wayward ember, the ground fell onto itself and we knew from the amount of smoke present that something very bad was happening. The fire department had to be called in and we had followed all the park regulations about having a fire. We did not get in any touble but we have not gone camping since!

It just goes to show how dangerous one small ember can be.

OPPS!

HA! oops. Im going to send that to my boyfriend. (I think this is an exception cause Im not talking to him about erings)
