Hi guys. I'm getting everything in place to ask the big quustion but I am feeling moderately clueless about the ring.

I know I'll be going for a round solitaire. From the browsing I've done so far, I am leaning heavily towards a cathedral pave setting, definitely in white gold.

As of right now, I am looking at a price range of 6,000-7,000. I'm thinking that will be 8-900 on the setting, leaving me up to about 6,000 for the stone. (I'm not factoring shipping or mounting or anything, that's budgeted for, I'm talking only ring cost here.)

As for what I don't know: Pretty much everything else.

I am unsure about what size to go for, or what I should be shooting for in terms of color/clarity etc.

I am pretty certain I want to go 1.00 or larger, maybe up to 1.25ish. For my price range though, clearly I want a clean, nice looking stone. I am thinking I want to go just high in enough in clarity and color for example, that if I went higher, she wouldn't notice a difference. Size is a definite concern to me, but I don't want a noticeble flaw or one that's dull, just so I can have it be large.

So, I guess question1 is, in a round cut solitaire, what would you guys think is a best blend of size and quality, shooting for a 5-6500$ stone?

Here's my other issues.

I haven't decided where to make this purchase yet. Option one is online of course. I don't care for the way that some sites can't give you an image of the actual stone. I do like some of the resources I have found here.

Option two, I was speaking to a friend on the issue, and it turned out, her sister is a regional manager at a Jewlery store, and also a certified gemologist. She has offered to do some looking for me, send me photos and help me pick one that way. She says, that if with some real searching she could probably find something in the 1.20-1.50 range even depending on luck, and that obviously going larger for my price range could mean looking at some SI1or SI2 but that I shouldn't be afraid of that, and that if its well chosen it should be just fine.

Other reasons I am clueless about size. well, I am just plain clueless about size, for one. I don't really know what would look normal, what would look small, and what would look just garish. I don't want to be gaudy by any means, but I want a stone thats is going to rate some good ooohs and ahhs, and of course I obviously want her to be speechless. (this will be a surprise proposal). With that said, I know somebody did once propose to her before, and I don't knwo what size he had, but I do believe it was at least 1ct. Should that matter to me? I dunno. Does it matter to me? I'm a guy OF COURSE IT DOES!

Sorry about writig a whole novel here, but I thought the more detail I give, the better advice I'd get. Thanks for any advice.

Oh, in terms of what's big enough vs too big for her hand, in terms of style, and stone size; I wouldn't sayshe has small hands, but they are kind of slender. not skinny, just very feminine. Size 6. See below.

Thanks again.

the search link in my previous post contained all the "ideal cut- excellent stones" these stones score 2.0 or below on the HCA (holloway cut advisor). that means they are the best in cut quality.

The next category down is "very good". Still a great cut quality, but allows your to go alittle bit bigger for the money than the ideal stones will.
