Because yours truly is truly waffling, I thought I'd create another poll so maybe you could help me.

Option A: the plan was to use the lavender sapphire and mint/grossular garnet alternating as a halo around a red spinel, in Yvonne's oval sunflower ring design, probably in rose gold.

IMG_20200416_165203.jpg

Option B: use a grossular garnet as the center, in Yvonne's Camellia ring, go back to square one with red spinel. I'd have 1 each of melee left over, which would be "wasted" as I don't have any more of these hand.

Please give feedback and vote!

Use them in a pendant, set them on a bail. Here is my daughter's new pendant with "big"IMG_9592 (2).JPG Nasarawa teal aqua and 2 melee (demantoid and Montana sapphire)

Red spinel. I just....am not the biggest fan of purple and green together lol (unless I'm painting w/very desaturated shades lol). Reminds me of Barney lol

That's a good point, but I've always thought of Barney as magenta, not purple, and these sapphires are lavender colored, which is what I associate with flowers.

Four future projects here. I would call the top left center gem purple.

True. It's a very personal preference thing for me. Though magenta to me is more like a pinkish purple? Barney purple is like...primary color purple lol aka my least favorite shade lol.

@Lilith112 Primary color purple is this.

Primary purple color is a balanced mix of red and blue.

Barney "purple" aka magenta is this.

Barney's "purple" has a lot of red in RGB value and only a tad of blue, hence it's not balanced and not primary people.

I see them as very different in hue. I like the natural purple in flowers, but don't like Barney color at all.

@voce I absolutely love your colour combinations and cannot decide between the two. However, do you want it to be very different from something you already have in your collection?
Maybe that would help you decide! ;)2

@voce I really like both. But I voted for red spinel. Because red spinel is amazing!

WoW! I am not helpful here as I love all your combinations posted and I love everything you touch... But I agree with Niffler: could you post a pic of your current collection. We will be better able to help you differentiate

I voted green + lavender but as many mentioned, it helps to know what you already have.

Same. I love your red spinel but I don't love it with the other colors. It feels Christmasy to me and not that there is anything wrong with that. We all love Christmas. Just not the color combo I would personally choose. Though they are both quite lovely so as long as you love it you cannot go wrong. But yes what is in your collection and what would be something you would like to add to it.

I voted green and lavender. That color combo just looked best to me.
Your red spinel is gorgeous but the color combo on that one just didn’t make the center stone pop as much...and a spinel that lovely should most definitely pop.

Are these in one of those gem boxes with a “sticky” lid? I’ve been looking for one for a while. If it is, I’d love to know where you got it.

I voted grossular garnet center. The red spinel with the green/lavender melee didn't look cohesive to me. My eye just kept going back and forth between the colors. With the garnet center, I saw a cohesive look that I found pleasing. Of course, once set, the spinel combination might look spectacular. I don't have the best ability to envision finished projects,

Everyone, I don't think that posting a photo of my collection will help much. IMG_20191222_111814.jpg
I have three red stones set into a red/white combo that "pops", and I'm thinking I have enough of those. I also have this Jedi spinel that pops on its own, no matter how you set it.
IMG_20191223_123343.jpg
So, I've used the red, lavender, green color combo before, but never with a non-white metal.

I think the spinel does pop on its own no matter the setting, and I think the addition of lavender and pink makes it not Christmas. I already have a tsav in rose gold with a white diamond halo. What do you all think of the garnet haloed by hot pink sapphires and ruby, as the picture above?

@elle_71125 I got the gem box from Yvonne, as a gift. They are from Stuller, and I'll pass on the link. https://www.stuller.com/products/62...m=62-4001&recommendationSource=SearchRedirect

@voce beautiful colorfulicious collection. I love the combo with the purple stone surrounded by the pink and blue best of the choices above.

@missy yes, that one is what I call a winning combo, and it's definitely how I've decided to set those gems. The blue gems are cobalt spinels from Yvonne, very rare, and I plan to set the gem layout into platinum.

@voce--haha, I saw your ring on Daniel M yesterday, the same setting I was considering, the trellis with the CS sidestones. That is one of the ones that made me lean towards that setting. How funny. I didn't know that ring belonged to you.

All your rings are fantastic. I liked either combo you are considering.

The green is awesome. I like your red spinel too, but the green garnet is appealing in a different way.

This is how I feel as well and is why I voted for the green combo

@voce I love the green garnet and hot pink combo. :kiss2:

I voted for the green, because the color combo feels like one focus with relationships around that theme. Basically, the colors accentuate the center of the stone, almost make it seem more amplified, as if they are celebrating it.

I voted red. In the pictures where you have a bunch of them all laid out together my eye always went directly to the red spinel -- this seems to be a minority opinion but I feel that the melee makes it pop :)

...on the other hand I am super biased towards bright red spinel, so, uh, there's that.

(The purple with pink and blue also drew my eye, yum!)

Thanks for the link. I hate that you have to buy them in bulk but I really want one so...

I freaking love the garnet with a hot pink halo. It’s a fantastic color combo IMO.
Final note: Your collections is freaking amazing!!! I’m still swooning over your paraiba Easter egg ring.

I'm super biased in favor of bright reds and blues, too, and your opinion counts a lot since this particular red spinel was in your possession before I got it from you. I was going to use another red spinel from Mahenge that was a perfect calibrated 7x5 size, but after laying it out realized that it looked much better E-W than N-S, so I went back to the original plan of setting your spinel with these melee. Here's the daytime look.

IMG_20200417_105330.jpg

@Bluegemz thank you for expressing what it is that makes the green stone as the center piece so pleasing to the eyes and had me waffling to begin with. I think I'm leaning more towards setting the grossular garnet with a hot pink halo because I like how that looks even more than the garnet melee accentuating the garnet center stone.

Ah, no wonder I was so drawn to that spinel :D I'm so pleased it's going to get set and worn and enjoyed, and this seems like a great setting for it (in my opinion, at least!)

You know what, the grossular garnet with a hot pink halo actually really appeals to me. I think the previous iteration with both green and pink halo, the green actually drew my eye away from the central garnet, and with just pink halo like you have it here, my eye is drawn to both, if that makes any sense. The varying sizes of melee helps with that too! Makes it look more flower-like.

Love the pink and green. It just pops and complements, not fight each other.

Something similar for the red spinel would be perfect but I'm not sure what colour melees. Red and green seems to "fight" for attention too much to my eyes. Technically, green complements red so I'm guess it might not be the right shade of green?

Not sure about the "technically" green complements red part. I only have grossular garnet and emerald to work with in this size range, and I don't know what shade green you consider ideal.

IMG_20200308_112515.jpg
I find this emerald ideal, but I only have the one. Greens this quality and color don't come in quantity in melee sizes. I bought Panjshir emerald melee gems from Yvonne, but as you can see from the layout been box (they are the loose stones without a center stone), they are lighter color. Columbian emerald melee are nicer in saturation but are treated and don't scintillate as much.

IMG_20200308_110241.jpg
Then there's demantoid garnet. They're no less expensive than emerald, and come in smaller sizes; I haven't seen 1.8mm size top color Russian demantoid up for sale.

Typically I like gold, like 24k gold color, next to red. But that's so difficult to find in an untreated gem! Even if I got fancy vivid yellow diamonds, the red spinel will still draw my eyes easily.

I think blue sapphire of a top color can complement red and provide contrast without competing, but they are seldom found untreated and top color in a melee size, and the effect will look very/too patriotic with red, white and blue.
IMG_20200223_144134.jpg

To my eyes the green of the melee garnets don't compete (they can't, not being vivid saturation) with the spinel. Much like the Easter egg concept paraiba ring, the concept here is to provide a more interesting backdrop (to me green and lavender make for a floral color scheme) that the color of the center red spinel pierces through. Likewise, the rose gold isn't meant to complement the red spinel, but the green and the lavender, and the red spinel can stand out on its own merit, without help from other stones specifically selected to provide pop.

Edit: I happen to like the look of this shade of rose gold against a red spinel. Probably wouldn't dare without already having a ring like this.

I love that top picture in your latest grouping of little reds around the green. They go well together. The tone and intensity matches up perfectly. Something like that but with your red in the middle.
