Hi

Sorry to ask yet another radiant cut diamond question.

It is just that there is a lot of talk about "crushed ice" on here and I just wondered what radiant diamonds which do NOT have the crushed ice effect actually look like? I have been trying to look (using James Allen pictures etc) but not really getting there.

Does anyone have a picture of what they would deem to be a non-crushed ice radiant?

Thanks in advance

Hi kmystery, how are you my dear? I hope you are enjoying your ring!

I thought you might enjoy this video where Jon from GOG discusses the crushed ice effect and shows some examples in this video. I haven't watched the video in a while to remember exactly what stones he uses for comparison but it should be helpful and it's one I plan on watching myself today. I am trying to find a photo of a PSer's radiant that doesn't show much if any crushed ice, but I don't know if the photo is still here, but I will try to find some examples if I can.

That is a great video, thank you for sharing Lorelei! I'm still kinda waffling on my lucida/radiantish cut and it made me feel that much better!

I'm glad Serendipity, sometimes a simple video or chat with someone can really make a difference, I am very glad to have been able to do so for you!

If you look at the diamonds and compare them to the facet patterns in the GIA reports you will star seeing the difference in the styles of radiants. The first one is fairly "chunky." The second two have more of a princess cut plotting maps and would probably still be considered crushed ice. The last two also have the crushed ice effect but it's not as pronounced to me as the last diamond. Radiants are tricky because they can have a "mushy" effect when you look at the diamond. I previously had one and I always thought it had soap build up and was constantly cleaning it... That's when I realized it was actually the way my diamond reflected light made it look cloudy/mushy/dirty.

I consider this more of the crushed ice look.

I love radiants and prefer the chunkier plot patterns. There is a specific plotting pattern that I love and I've noticed they all have a maple leaf inscription. I couldn't find any on James Allen (normally they have a few), but I will post if I see one again.

The non-crushed iced radiants have a distinctive faceting pattern. Its not just one pattern but they have patterns that you can
easily pick out symmetry in the stone. They usually have some facets that are larger (like a big X going through the middle of
the stone.)

The crushed ice radiants have tiny facets and usually show very little symmetry or its harder to pick out the symmetry.

(these are my definitions)

Here are some examples of non-crushed iced radiants(IMO)...

I'm not saying that any of the above radiants are good radiants, I'm just trying to illustrate what I think the difference is

Nice work folks! :appl:

thank you all, that really helps.

Lorelei - I am loving the sentiment behind the ring my hubby surprised me with, but have a few doubts with the diamond/setting the more I wear it. But I don't want to hurt his feelings and it really was such a lovely thing to do and I am so lucky. I am going to try and post some photos later on.

The links to James Allen have been really helpful. I suppose it is just trying to understand what this actually looks like on the hand, rather than so zoomed in on. Where I live, there is little opportunity to look at actual stones to improve my understanding!

Thanks again

I understand kmystery, but do you know what? I would bet your radiant is comparable to the vast majority out there and probably looks even better! To me, the radiants I have seen aren't perhaps the most active diamonds in the world when compared to a well cut round brilliant for example, they are a totally different kettle of fish and the ' crushed ice' radiants do seem to be the most usual type, but I still find those very appealing. I would maybe try thinking of it this way and forgive me for getting a bit sentimental here.... Your lovely Husband wanted to surprise you and went to a jewellery store to buy you the ring of your dreams, he picked a diamond and ring that he thought most closely matched what you wanted and chose this particular stone because he thought it was the most beautiful diamond he could present to his beloved that would make her happy, plus it's a D or E colour if I remember rightly? I think that's beautiful, I know we crunch numbers and performance nuances to the nth degree here, but in the end, it's all about enjoying the moment, the love your Husband has for you and the fact he wanted to adorn his wife with what some consider to be the most romantic gift in the world, a diamond ring, one your Hubby felt was worthy of his wonderful wife. THAT makes your ring very beautiful and unique - priceless!

I hope that helps a little, go and give your ring a good cleaning to make her shine, then go and give your lovely Hubby a big hug and a kiss! Sending you a hug too kmystery! xo

Lorelei, you are the best! I read your post, looked at my ring and just smiled. My hubby asked what I was smiling at and I gave him a big hug and kiss. He was very happy too :-)

You are quite right in what you say, thank you for reminding me what it is really all about x

I am definitely going to try and post photos/details later. I still have your other post about how to take the photos, so off to try now!

thanks again

You are most welcome Kmystery, I am so glad to be able to help and please do post photos, I would love to see your ring!!! If you need any help with the photos just shout, I should be around on and off most of the evening, it's pretty quiet as many are off to the GTG this weekend, but between us we should manage it if you have difficulty!

its not very sunny here at the moment, so can't really capture the sparkles, but I have taken some. Unfortunately, doesn't seem to want too allow me to upload.

I click on the "Insert image from server" and try and upload a photo but nothing happens :-(

I have just worked that one out myself, what I do is click save then upload image, then close the box and go to add the image again by clicking the diamond icon, then the image should be there saved, click the link, it should have the URL on the page then hit submit. Let me know if that works! If not, Kenny is around, he might be able to help or OVi.

Hope this works, some photos eventually (sorry for quality and number). It is a 0.51ct D VS2 rectangular radiant (5.52 x 4.18 x 2.67). Table 67%, Depth 63.9%. Only one hand photo (on the wrong hand, it is actually a RHR).

Thanks again Lorelei and everyone

Kmystery, it's a lovely radiant and it looks really substantial on your hand, I can also see how colourless it is! I love the shape too being more rectangular rather than square, it's such a lovely ring and for a RHR extremely substantial! Your Husband did good!!!

I was enjoying your photos again kmystery and I noticed what a little chameleon stone you have there, look at how it's picking up the colours around it, in some lights it looks violet like it is picking up and throwing out the colour of your walls, how lovely!

Thank you! I looked back again and see definitely what you mean. It does this with the clothes I wear too. Its got such a nice charcter about it :-)

It really is showing off a violet hue, how fun!! I love it when diamonds do that but I don't see it often, that makes it even more special, it will be like having a different ring to go with each outfit!

If you have time and the sun is out where you live, try taking some pics with the sun behind the stone and with sunlight filtered through a leafy tree, I bet it would do some amazing things in those lighting conditions!
