Another round of searching for a yellow diamond

(I can't believe I haven't bought one yet). Lots of things have changed, and COVID is not the best gem-enticing time, but every autumn the same thing happens. I think I made a first post about FYD in 2015. I can't believe I haven't found one. (I bought a FIY at Costco, and returned it. Need a vivid one).

They are not cheap, and besides, buying diamonds is a perfect test for OCD for me. (Incessant what ifs) Moreover, I never saw a FVY that I would like IRL.

Can you help me find one? Please?

Here are my questions:

- I know people who like Asscher cut. Does it have any value in colored diamonds, or would a step cut make a stone look more like a yellow sapphire?

- How visible are carbons in S1? (I know, one has to look in person, but in general, where would you draw the line? VS2?)

- having looked at multiple orange-yellows online... maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me that they look slightly burned IRL. (I have a brown diamond in rose gold, and I don't wear it. It is good, but I plan to sell it if I buy the yellow).

- are yellowish/green vivids desirable? "Just green" are expensive, and the cheaper ones are slightly grayish. Or would you advise me to stick with pure canary?

- cut... Am I right in assuming that radiant is the best for vivid yellow, because otherwise why even search for colored diamonds, and not splurge on a yellow sapphire?

Just help me buy one, please. Given some changes in the family, I would like it to be a stone that could be a heirloom piece, but somehow, it is too complicated for me. Any advice will be appreciated; if I end up without one, no biggie and definitely not a tragedy, given what I have seen, but I worked hard enough and I think I earned one.

An example:

It is a gorgeous stone, but I draw the line below $50K (the price of a device that I can potentially buy for my work, and it will help people, so I can't imagine going above this for myself).

Of course, anything below (meaning 1.2 -1.5 K) is even better as I have side yellow stones and can visually enlarge it.

I saw a very nice stone an leibisch but it was 0.8 K and I have big hands. Would people advise double halo, or is it a little bit too much? (I like side stones, or "martini glass" sets, but it is doable).

Also, sorry for straightforward questions, and maybe I have offended people who like step cuts, but as I said, last two years made me very straightforward. Sometimes I wish I had the courage to be even more direct. Life has shown that "whatever you choose" answer does not work in our times.

Hello Ark,

Long time no see.

Asscher - not the best cut for CS but can be beautiful. It will be deep by nature so you will be paying for size you won't see. It will be difficult to get a well cut Asscher yellow diamond that performs well. It will never look like sapphire because the diamond properties are too different.

Clarity - depends on the cut (asschers will show everything) and also the colour of the inclusions. If I had a choice, I'd go with "white / yellow" inclusions rather than dark/black ones.

Burnt - that will depend on the tone. Too much brown, not enough saturation, etc can make it look "burnt".

Yellow / Green - personal preference but I prefer straight yellow or even every so slightly brown as long as it doesn't go into the "burnt" territory. I quite like a touch of orange but we know anything with a hint of orange will be expensive.

Radiant is the "best" cut because it concentrates colour the best for all coloured diamonds.

Dear Chrono,

Thank you for your kind answer!
I was almost crying making that post - what have we all, as the society, been through during this two years, how much has been lost.

Thank you for your graceful answer!
I looked some of the stones up and came to the conclusion that if the stone is vivid yellow but fluorescence turns it into green in some lights, I really like it.

Well, thank you! I shall look around and even if I don't find whatever I want, I shall buy the smaller one that has a nice color because one can not wait for 6 years. I never bought diamonds. not my stone, hence the concern. Hopefully, I can ask your advise if I end up having more questions.

I'm so excited to see this thread! FCDs are my all time favorite, as to me they are the best of both worlds. I've never had the budget you suggested up thread, so this should be so much fun!

My 2 cents about double halos- Go for it! The contrast between fcd and "white" diamonds only makes it more amazing, imo.

Hi Arcadian,
With the Argyle mine now closed (many vendors are raising prices because of the new “rarity” factor), and the holiday season and economic recovery on the way, you will most definitely be overpaying for an FCD right now, especially yellow. I would probably wait till next year, and definitely shop around

HI:

WELCOME back!!! I've missed you!

I wonder if David at Diamonds by Lauren would be able to answer your questions; I know I cannot. @Rockdiamond

cheers--Sharon
