A student opend fire today in his school cafeteria...this breaks my heart.Story here.

OMG! What is this world coming to?? People need to start taking the words and actions of teenagers seriously!!

Just recently, my DH (high school teacher) made a report to a child protective services agency because he learned that one of his student''s parents had been verbally abusing him and that he had a history of attempted suicide and was talking about attempting on this day. When DH called the appropriate authorities, they told him the incident wasn''t reportable (okay...I can buy this), and that teens tend to overreact when they''re stressed...this is a kid who has a history of attempts!!! How this social worker could minimize or dismiss this was WAY beyond me!!!

We, as a society, need to pay attention to our teenagers and intervene...not minimize what they''re feeling...

It''s so sad....

How could that happen??
schools are a gun free zone.
Back in my day and that wasn''t too long ago we shot rifles in the high school basement. We didn''t have shootings hmmmmmmm.

If there was a problem it was settled with fists and you got a 1 day suspension for it.
Now days they call the cops and kids get arrested for fighting so there is no pressure outlet and they wonder why kids explode.

Gosh how scary! I wasn''t in high school that long ago either and we never had incidents like this!

Does it seem teenagers today are under more stress than we were as teens? I cannot tell you the number of prescriptions I fill for antidepressants that are for people under the age of 18! And in one pharmacy that I worked at, it seemed like every other child was on Ritalin! I didn''t know anyone my age on an antidepressant when I was in high school.

There was an article in the local paper last year about how many parents (moms especially) are working when their children are young then quiting and staying at home when their kids turn to pre-teens and teenagers. Apparently the after school hours (between 3 - 5pm) is when a lot of kids get into trouble because they are on their own with both parents working. This article said that teens are so vulnerable that they need their parents more at this age than any other age.

I have two toddlers and it scares me to think what they will face when they become school age.

In my opinion a lot of kids these days are so protected that they never learn to deal with stress then they dont know how to deal with it and explode.
Back in my day not to long ago a fist fight served to release a lot of stress and take the lid off the pressure cooker.

One thing iv noticed that a lot of these shootings that make the big time news are ones where its kids that have had everything made easy for them go off.
Eveerytime the parents will say; "I dont understand it we gave them everything".

When Joe crack head shots Jack crack head it doesnt make the news its just another gang shooting.

the following statement is not directed at you, storm, because i think you called it right in the above but just sugar coated it: more american double standard.

peace, movie zombie

I''m not sure that "these days" are really that much different.

Back before I went to high school there was a kid in the scool I eventually went to who pulled a gun on another kid over a twinkie. Are things really that much different?
