Does anyone know about old synthetic rubies?

I just bought an antique ring (1920-30''s) because it held a pair of stunning diamonds (hello earrings), but it also has a beautiful, bright chunky old mine cut 1.3ct (approx. by measurements) synthetic ruby that tests positive on the gem tester as a ruby (described as flame-fusion, medium dark, moderately strong red-purple or purple-red). If it''s worth it, I''m considering a re-set with a diamond halo, but wonder how much I should invest in setting a synthetic stone. Is it worth it? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I can''t tell you about $$ worth, but I love them! There were some very lovely piece, high end, made using these stones. Keep us in the loop regarding what your plan is.

And by the way...... WHERE ARE THE PICTURES???

The general rule for synthetics is that we''re not supposed to discuss them. That said, you may want to visit a jeweler to help you decide if they''re really worth setting.

Very high quality synthetic Rubies may be had for less than $10 per carat, if that helps you.

Though synthetic rubies may be inexpensive, I think I would love a ruby in an old mine cut. I'd definitely keep it and set it, though probably try to set it inexpensively. I don't see anything wrong with a synthetic stone, and I think it would be interesting to have an antique synthetic.

Don''t know anything about them but I have one from that time period that was given to my grandpa and that I now have. It might not be worth much in terms of money but for sentimental value it is priceless to me and i plan to reset it too.

Thank you all so much for your input! The ruby is pretty and I love the older cuts, but probably not worth investing a lot in the reset. Still, I''ll probably do something with it. My plan is to run the piece by my local antique jeweler to see what she says about it and I will be sure to keep you posted on the project. And I''ll take a picture of the ring to post soon, too (it''s on my "to do" list for this weekend!).

Stepcutgirl - I''d be interested in seeing what you do with your ruby considering the sentimental value it has for you. Have you thought about specifics?

Please remember that we do not allow photos or discussion about synthetic stones on the forum. Discussing setting options is fine, but photos and general synthetic discussion are not allowed. I am sorry for any inconvenience.

Hi, Ella! Thanks for letting me know about the synthetic policies. How does that apply to a ring with a synthetic stone (ruby) and two natural diamonds? Can I post a picture of that or is that not allowed? Sorry to ask but I''m a little new to pricescope and couldn''t find anything about this specific issue.

I''m sorry but it isn''t allowed. Our forum policies address synthetics broadly under section #2:

What it''s in now is a mens setting that has some odd symbols on it. It''s a step cut that is slightly rectangular with no cut corners or windmills and it''s windowed! I think I am going to reset it into a halo with a plain shank. Jewelryhoo has such a setting for a fairly inexpensive price. While it has sentimental value I''m not willing to put alot of money into the reset.

I know what you mean about not wanting to spend much on the reset, but I do like your halo idea (not just because it was mine as well) -- especially for a step cut like that!

Maybe you should put this in the synthetics lab forum.
